How to Disable “Personalized Ads” (Apple Advertising) on iPhone

The First-Party Advertising Profile

While Apple aggressively markets the iPhone as a privacy-focused device that blocks third-party trackers, Apple maintains its own internal advertising network. By default, iOS monitors your App Store searches, the news articles you read in Apple News, and the stocks you follow in order to build a “Personalized Ads” profile. Apple then uses this telemetry to serve you targeted advertisements within its own native applications (like the App Store and the Stocks app). If you demand absolute privacy and zero algorithmic targeting, you must disable Apple’s first-party ad network.

How to Turn Off Personalized Ads

You can permanently sever the connection to Apple’s internal advertising algorithm via the Privacy settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down to the very bottom of the screen.
  4. Tap on Apple Advertising.
  5. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Personalized Ads.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Algorithmic Neutrality

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for cataloging your native app usage for marketing purposes. The operating system will immediately instruct Apple’s cloud servers to permanently sever your Apple ID from the targeted advertising database. While you may still see advertisements in the App Store or Apple News, they will now be completely generic, mathematically disconnected from your personal reading habits, searches, and financial interests.
