The Internal Advertising Network
While Apple often markets itself as a champion of privacy against third-party data brokers, the company operates its own highly lucrative internal advertising network. By default, your iPhone tracks your app downloads, your search history in the App Store, your Apple News reading habits, and your location to build a hidden profile. This profile is then used to serve you “Personalized Ads” in the App Store, Apple News, and Stocks apps. If you want true privacy, you must explicitly opt out of Apple’s own monetization ecosystem.
How to Turn Off Apple Advertising
You can permanently sever the connection between your Apple ID and the internal advertising network via the Privacy settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
- Scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the screen.
- Tap on Apple Advertising.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Personalized Ads.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A De-Monetized Apple ID
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for compiling your Apple-specific usage profile. Apple’s servers are now legally barred from utilizing your App Store search history or Apple News reading habits to target you with specific sponsored content. You will still see advertisements in those specific apps, but they will be completely generic and mathematically disconnected from your personal data, ensuring your identity is no longer being actively monetized by the manufacturer.
