How to Disable the Lock Sound on iPhone

The Artificial Click

By default, whenever you press the physical power button on the side of your iPhone to turn off the screen, the device plays a brief, synthetic “click” sound. This audio cue is designed to reassure you that the phone is securely locked before you slide it into your pocket. However, if you are sitting in a quiet office, a library, or a sleeping house, that sharp clicking noise can be surprisingly loud and disruptive. If you want your phone to remain completely silent when you lock it, without having to permanently keep the physical mute switch engaged, you can disable the artificial lock sound.

How to Turn Off the Lock Sound

You can completely silence the lock confirmation via the system’s Sound settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page.
  4. Look for the toggle switch labeled Lock Sound.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Silent Security

The change takes effect instantly. The next time you press the side button, the iPhone’s screen will instantly turn black and secure the device, but the speaker will remain completely silent. The phone will no longer generate the artificial click, allowing you to lock your device discreetly in any environment, regardless of whether the physical mute switch is currently on or off.
