When your iPhone is in your pocket on silent mode, every incoming text message or phone call feels exactly the same. You feel a standard, generic vibration, forcing you to pull the phone out of your pocket just to see if it is your boss, your spouse, or a spam caller. To help you screen calls and messages without ever looking at the screen, iOS allows you to create completely custom, unique vibration patterns and assign them to specific people in your Contacts app.
How to Create a Custom Vibration Pattern
You can literally tap out a rhythm on your iPhone screen to create a new vibration signature.
- Open the Contacts app on your iPhone (or the Phone app and tap the Contacts tab).
- Scroll through your list and select the specific person you want to customize (e.g., your spouse).
- In the top-right corner of their contact card, tap Edit.
- Scroll down and tap on Ringtone (or Text Tone, depending on which notification you want to customize).
- At the very top of the next screen, tap on Haptics.
- Scroll past the default options and tap on Create New Vibration.
- You will see a large, grey recording screen. Tap your finger on the center of the screen to create vibrations. A short tap creates a short buzz; pressing and holding creates a long, continuous buzz. For example, you could tap out a heartbeat pattern (tap-tap, pause, tap-tap).
- When you are finished tapping out your pattern, tap Stop in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Play in the bottom-left corner to feel a playback of your creation.
- If you are happy with it, tap Save in the top-right corner. Give your custom vibration a recognizable name (e.g., “Heartbeat”) and tap Save again.
Assigning the Pattern and Real-World Use
Once saved, the iPhone will automatically assign that new vibration pattern to the contact you were editing. You can now tap Done in the top-right corner to exit the edit screen.
If you want to assign that exact same custom vibration (e.g., “Heartbeat”) to another person, you do not need to record it again. Simply go to that new person’s contact card, tap Edit, go to Ringtone > Haptics, and look under the “Custom” section. Your previously recorded vibration will be listed there, ready to be selected with a single tap.
Now, when your phone is in your pocket and it buzzes with that specific rhythm, you will instantly know exactly who is calling without taking your eyes off what you are doing.
