How to Connect a PlayStation 5 Controller to an iPhone

Modern iPhones possess processors more powerful than many older home consoles, making them capable of running visually intense games like Genshin Impact, Call of Duty: Mobile, and even full console titles via remote play apps. However, trying to play a fast-paced shooter using a flat glass touchscreen is frustrating and imprecise.

Fortunately, Apple natively supports the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. Because the DualSense uses standard Bluetooth technology, connecting it to your iPhone takes only seconds and requires absolutely no third-party apps or jailbreaking.

Step 1: Put the DualSense into Pairing Mode

Before your iPhone can discover the controller, you must force the DualSense to broadcast its Bluetooth signal.

  1. Ensure the PS5 controller is currently turned off. (If it is connected to your physical PlayStation console, turn the console off or hold the PS button on the controller for ten seconds until the lights go out).
  2. Locate the Create button. This is the small, oval-shaped button located to the top-left of the large central touchpad. (It is the equivalent of the old “Share” button on the PS4).
  3. Locate the PS button (the PlayStation logo in the bottom center).
  4. Press and hold both the Create button and the PS button simultaneously.
  5. Keep holding both buttons for about three to five seconds.
  6. The light bar that outlines the central touchpad will begin to blink rapidly in short, blue bursts. This aggressive flashing pattern confirms the controller is in discovery mode.

Step 2: Pair the Controller to the iPhone

Now that the controller is broadcasting, you must tell your iPhone to look for it.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on Bluetooth.
  3. Ensure the main Bluetooth toggle switch at the top is turned ON.
  4. Look at the very bottom of the screen under the section labeled “Other Devices.” Your iPhone is actively scanning the room.
  5. Within a few seconds, the name “DualSense Wireless Controller” will appear in the list.
  6. Tap that name.

The rapidly blinking blue lights on the PS5 controller will turn a solid, steady color (often pink or blue, depending on the game). Your iPhone screen will move the controller to the “My Devices” list and label it “Connected.” You are ready to play.

Customizing the Controller (Remapping Buttons)

Once the controller is connected, iOS provides deep system-level customization. You can remap buttons, invert the thumbsticks, and adjust the haptic feedback (rumble).

  1. Go to Settings > General on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on Game Controller. (Note: This menu option remains completely invisible until a controller is actively connected).
  3. Tap on the name of your controller to access its specific profiles.
  4. Here, you can create a custom mapping profile. For example, if you prefer the Xbox layout, you can swap the X button and the Square button. These changes will apply globally to every game you play on the iPhone.

How to Disconnect and Reconnect

When you are finished playing, you do not need to go back into your iPhone settings to disconnect. Simply hold down the PS button for about ten seconds, and the controller will physically turn off, instantly severing the Bluetooth connection.

The next time you want to play on your iPhone, simply tap the PS button once to turn the controller on, and it will auto-connect instantly.

Important Warning: A Bluetooth controller can only remember one “master” device at a time. If you connect your DualSense to your iPhone, it intentionally forgets your PS5 console in the living room. When you want to play a game on your TV later, you will have to plug the controller back into the physical PS5 console with a USB-C cable to re-pair it.
