How to Completely Disable ‘Lock Sound’ System-Wide on an iPhone

The Lock Sound on an iPhone is the distinct, mechanical “click” audio file that plays every time you press the physical side button to turn the screen off, and again when the device is unlocked. While intended to mimic the physical feedback of locking a mechanical mechanism, this auditory confirmation is often redundant and disruptive. In quiet environments like meetings, classrooms, or late at night, the sudden “click” broadcasts that you are actively using (or putting away) your phone. If you already rely on the visual cue of the screen going dark, the sound is entirely unnecessary.

This guide explains how to completely disable the Lock Sound system-wide on an iPhone, allowing you to lock and unlock your device in absolute silence without having to mute your entire ringer volume.

Disable the Lock Sound

To stop the operating system from triggering this specific audio file during power state transitions, you must disable the feature within the core sounds and haptics settings.

  1. Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Scroll down to the very bottom of this menu to find the system-level audio toggles.
  4. Locate the toggle switch for Lock Sound.
  5. Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off (grey) position.

Verify the Silent Lock

Toggling this switch immediately disables the audio file playback tied to the hardware button interrupt. This change applies regardless of whether your phone’s physical Ring/Silent switch is set to “Ring.”

To verify the change is successful, ensure your iPhone’s physical Ring/Silent switch on the side of the device is flipped up (so the orange indicator is hidden, meaning the ringer is ON). Ensure your volume is up. Now, press the physical Side button to lock the screen. The display will instantly go black without making a single sound. Press it again to wake the device, and unlock it via Face ID or Touch ID; it will remain completely silent. You have successfully eliminated the auditory disruption of managing your device’s power state.
