Apple’s “Find My” service is a powerful anti-theft tool that not only allows you to track a lost device on a map but also strictly enforces “Activation Lock.” This hardware-level lock prevents anyone from erasing and activating your iPhone without your Apple ID password. However, there is a critical scenario where you absolutely must disable this feature: when you are selling, trading in, or handing down your iPhone. If you perform a factory reset while Find My is still active, the phone will remain perpetually tied to your iCloud account, rendering it a useless brick to the next owner.
This guide explains how to completely disable the “Find My” service and remove Activation Lock system-wide on an iPhone.
Disable Find My via iCloud Settings
To remove the hardware lock, you must explicitly deregister the device from Apple’s activation servers by authenticating with your current Apple ID password.
- Ensure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data (it must be able to reach Apple’s servers).
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Tap on your Apple ID profile banner at the very top of the screen (where your name and profile picture reside).
- Tap on Find My.
- Tap on Find My iPhone at the top of the subsequent menu.
- Locate the toggle switch next to Find My iPhone.
- Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off position.
- A security prompt will appear demanding your Apple ID password. Enter it carefully and tap Turn Off in the top right corner.
Verify the Deregistration
The device will briefly communicate with Apple’s servers to sever the cryptographic tie to your account.
To verify the lockdown is successfully removed, look at the “Find My iPhone” toggle switch; it should now be entirely greyed out and in the “Off” position. Furthermore, if you navigate to iCloud.com on a separate computer and log into your Find My dashboard, this specific iPhone will no longer populate on the map or in your device list. The iPhone is now completely free of Activation Lock and is safe to be factory reset and transferred to a new user.
