Over hundreds of charge cycles, the battery’s maximum capacity gradually declines, meaning it holds less charge and your laptop runs for a shorter period between charges. Apple has built comprehensive battery health monitoring and management tools directly into macOS, allowing you to track your battery’s condition over time and enable intelligent charging features that actively slow down this degradation process.
Why Battery Health Monitoring Matters
A brand-new MacBook battery is rated at 100% of its designed capacity. After approximately 500 complete charge cycles (Apple’s definition of cycling from 100% to 0% and back), the battery is expected to retain around 80% of its original capacity. However, poor charging habits—such as constantly keeping the MacBook plugged in at 100% or regularly draining it to 0%—can accelerate this degradation significantly. By monitoring your battery’s health and enabling Apple’s built-in optimisation features, you can extend its useful life by years.
Checking Your Battery’s Current Health Status
macOS provides a detailed readout of your battery’s current condition and cycle count.
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Battery.
- You will see a summary showing your current charge level and whether the battery status is listed as Normal or Service Recommended.
- Click the small info (i) icon next to the Battery Health section to view additional details, including the Maximum Capacity percentage and the total Cycle Count.
A Normal status means the battery is functioning within expected parameters. If it reads Service Recommended, the maximum capacity has dropped significantly below Apple’s threshold, and you should consider having the battery replaced by an Apple Authorised Service Provider.
Enabling Optimised Battery Charging
Optimised Battery Charging is an intelligent feature that uses machine learning to study your daily charging routine. If macOS detects that you typically plug in your MacBook overnight and unplug it at 8 AM, it will charge the battery to approximately 80% and then pause. Just before your predicted departure time, it will complete the charge to 100%. This reduces the total amount of time the battery spends at maximum voltage, which is the primary cause of long-term capacity loss.
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
- Click Battery in the left-hand sidebar.
- Click the info (i) icon next to Battery Health.
- Toggle Optimised Battery Charging to the On position.
When this feature is active, you may occasionally see a notification on your screen stating “Charging on hold” along with an estimated time when the charge will resume to 100%. This is expected behaviour and indicates the feature is working correctly.
Checking Your Cycle Count via System Information
For a more granular technical view of your battery, you can access the System Information utility directly.
- Hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click the Apple menu.
- Select System Information.
- In the left-hand sidebar, under the Hardware section, click on Power.
- You will see a detailed report including the Charge Information, the Full Charge Capacity (in milliamp-hours), the Cycle Count, and the overall Condition.
The Full Charge Capacity value can be compared against your MacBook model’s original design capacity (found on Apple’s support website) to calculate the exact percentage of capacity remaining.
Practical Tips for Maximising Battery Longevity
Beyond enabling Optimised Battery Charging, you should avoid routinely draining your MacBook to 0% before recharging. Lithium-ion cells prefer shallow discharge cycles. If you use your MacBook primarily at a desk, consider unplugging it periodically to allow partial discharge cycles rather than keeping it perpetually tethered to the charger. Extreme temperatures also harm battery chemistry, so avoid using or charging your MacBook in direct sunlight or in environments below freezing.
