How to Check Your Cellular Data Usage on an iPhone

If you are not on an unlimited data plan, carefully monitoring your cellular data consumption is critical to avoid massive overage charges on your monthly phone bill. While your carrier provides official usage statistics via their app or website, the iPhone itself keeps a very detailed, built-in log of exactly how much data you have consumed. This internal tracker can show you your total usage and break down exactly which specific apps are eating up your data allowance.

How to Check Your Total Cellular Data Usage

The iPhone’s data tracker is built directly into the main system settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on Cellular (or “Mobile Data” in some regions).
  3. Scroll down to the section titled Cellular Data (or “Mobile Data Usage”).
  4. Look at the number next to Current Period. This is the total amount of cellular data your phone has downloaded and uploaded since the statistics were last reset.

How to Check Which Apps Use the Most Data

Directly beneath the “Current Period” total, you will see a long, alphabetical list of every single app installed on your iPhone.

Underneath the name of each app, there is a number (e.g., 540 MB, 1.2 GB). This indicates exactly how much cellular data that specific app has used during the current period. If you notice an app (like a social media app or a video streaming service) is consuming an unreasonable amount of your data plan, you can revoke its cellular privileges entirely.

To stop an app from using cellular data, simply toggle the green switch next to the app’s name to the off (grey) position. The app will now only be able to connect to the internet when you are on Wi-Fi.

How to Reset the Data Statistics

The “Current Period” on the iPhone does not automatically reset when your monthly billing cycle rolls over. It only resets when you manually tell it to. If you want accurate tracking for your current month, you must reset the statistics on the first day of your billing cycle.

  1. Scroll to the absolute bottom of the Cellular settings page (past the long list of apps).
  2. Tap the blue text that says Reset Statistics.
  3. A popup will appear asking you to confirm. Tap Reset Statistics again.

All data counters will instantly return to zero, allowing you to accurately track your usage for the new month.
