How to Change the Mac Cursor Size and Colour

If you find yourself constantly losing track of the small black mouse pointer on your Mac’s screen, or if you simply want to customize it to match your personal aesthetic, macOS makes it very easy to change the cursor’s appearance. Deep within the accessibility settings, you can adjust both the size and the color of your pointer. Here is how to change the Mac cursor size and color.

How to Customize the Mac Pointer

Customizing your cursor takes just a few clicks in the System Settings app. Follow these steps:

  1. Click the Apple menu () located in the top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings from the drop-down menu. (If you are running an older version of macOS like Monterey or earlier, this will be called System Preferences).
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Accessibility.
  4. Under the “Vision” section, click on Display.
  5. Scroll down until you find the Pointer section. Here, you will find all the customization options for your cursor.

Adjusting Size and Color

Once you are in the Pointer settings, you can make the following adjustments:

  • Change Pointer Size: Look for the Pointer size slider. Drag the slider to the right to make the cursor significantly larger, or drag it to the left to return it to the default small size.
  • Change Pointer Outline and Fill Color: You will see two color wells labeled Pointer outline color (the border of the cursor) and Pointer fill color (the inside of the cursor). Click on the color square next to either option to open the color picker palette and choose any color you like.

If you ever want to revert to the classic black-and-white Mac cursor, simply click the Reset button located below the color options.

Bonus: Shake to Locate

In this same settings menu, you will notice an option called Shake mouse pointer to locate. When this toggle is turned on, quickly moving your mouse back and forth (or swiping quickly on the trackpad) will cause the cursor to temporarily grow to a massive size, making it instantly easy to spot on your screen without permanently changing its default size.
