The URL Routing Vector
macOS is tightly integrated with the Apple ecosystem, and as such, Safari is hardcoded as the primary gateway to the internet. Whenever you click a web link inside an email, a PDF document, or a messaging application like Slack, the operating system bypasses your currently open applications and forces Safari to launch and render the page. If your daily workflow relies on Chrome extensions, Firefox privacy tools, or Edge profiles, constantly being redirected back to Safari is highly disruptive.
How to Change the Default Web Browser
You can overwrite the system-level URL routing to ensure all external links open in your preferred third-party browser.
1. Ensure that your preferred browser (such as Google Chrome or Firefox) is already downloaded and installed in your Applications folder.
2. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the screen.
3. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu.
4. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Desktop & Dock.
5. Scroll through the main pane until you locate the Default web browser dropdown menu.
6. Click the dropdown menu and select your newly installed browser from the list.
macOS will immediately update its internal routing tables. From this point forward, clicking any hyperlink across the entire operating system will automatically launch your chosen browser.
