If you frequently read international news sites, conduct research across foreign-language academic journals, or shop on overseas e-commerce platforms, manually tapping the translation button on every single webpage is a frustrating disruption to your workflow. Apple Safari on the iPad features a powerful, built-in translation engine that can be configured to automatically translate specific websites or entire languages into English the moment a page loads.
How to Trigger the Automatic Translation Feature
Apple does not expose the automatic translation controls in the main iPadOS Settings app; instead, you must configure the automation directly from the browser’s address bar while viewing a foreign-language webpage.
- Open the Safari browser on your iPad.
- Navigate to a website written in a foreign language (e.g., a French newspaper or a Japanese tech blog).
- Wait for the webpage to fully load.
- Look at the address bar at the top of the screen. On the far left or right (depending on your layout), you will see an icon displaying a small A next to a larger A (the Page Settings icon).
- Tap the aA icon.
- Select Translate to English from the dropdown menu. (If this is your first time using the feature, your iPad may prompt you to Enable Translation).
The webpage will instantly reload with the text translated into English. However, this is only a manual, one-time translation. To automate the process, we must take one more step.
How to Automate Future Translations
Once the page is translated, the aA icon in the address bar will change to a black Translation icon (two speech bubbles).
- Tap the new Translation icon in the address bar.
- A new menu will appear, showing your current translation status.
- Tap on Translation Settings.
- You will be presented with two automation toggles:
- Translate [Language]: Turn this toggle on if you want Safari to automatically translate every website written in this specific language into English, regardless of the URL.
- Translate [Website Name]: Turn this toggle on if you only want this specific domain (e.g., lemonde.fr) to automatically translate, leaving other sites in that language untouched.
Once you make your selection, you can close the menu. The next time you open a new tab and navigate to that website or a site in that language, Safari will instantly execute the translation engine in the background before rendering the text on your screen, providing a seamless reading experience.
