The Unwanted Speakerphone
Through Apple’s Continuity features, your Mac and your iPhone are deeply integrated. When your iPhone rings, your Mac rings too, allowing you to answer the call directly from your computer. However, some users discover a startling behavior: the Mac automatically answers incoming FaceTime or standard cellular calls without any user input, immediately broadcasting the caller’s voice through the Mac’s speakers. This auto-answer feature is designed as an accessibility tool, but if it is enabled accidentally, it represents a massive breach of privacy in an office or public environment.
How to Disable Auto-Answer in macOS Settings
The setting that controls this behavior is buried deep within the Accessibility menus, not within the standard FaceTime or Phone application settings.
1. Click the Apple logo () in the top-left corner of your screen.
2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions).
3. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Accessibility.
4. In the right-hand pane, scroll down to the “Motor” section and click on Voice Control.
5. Look for an option or button labelled Auto-answer calls. (In some older versions of macOS, this setting was located under Accessibility > Motor > Switch Control).
6. Turn off the toggle switch next to “Auto-answer calls.”
Once disabled, your Mac will still ring when a call comes in, but it will patiently wait for you to explicitly click the green “Accept” button with your mouse before opening the audio channel.
How to Stop Your Mac from Ringing Entirely
If you don’t want your Mac to ring at all when your iPhone receives a call, you must disable the Continuity feature that links the two devices for cellular calls.
1. Open the FaceTime application on your Mac.
2. In the top menu bar, click on FaceTime and select Settings…
3. Look for a checkbox labelled Calls from iPhone.
4. Uncheck this box.
Your Mac will now remain completely silent during incoming cellular calls, leaving your iPhone to handle them exclusively.
