Robocalls, telemarketers, and spam callers have become a daily annoyance for almost everyone with a smartphone. If your iPhone is constantly ringing with calls from numbers you do not recognize, it can disrupt your workday and ruin your focus. To combat this, Apple built a powerful, system-level feature into iOS called “Silence Unknown Callers.” When activated, your iPhone will automatically intercept and mute any incoming call from a number that is not explicitly saved in your contacts.
How the Feature Works
When “Silence Unknown Callers” is turned on, the iPhone uses a strict filtering system before it allows the phone to ring. If a call comes in, iOS quickly checks your Contacts app, your recent outgoing calls list, and even Siri Suggestions (which scans your emails and text messages for phone numbers).
- If the number is found in any of those trusted locations, your phone rings normally.
- If the number is completely unknown, your phone will not ring, and the screen will not light up. The call is instantly sent directly to your voicemail.
How to Enable Silence Unknown Callers
You can activate this feature deep within the primary phone settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Phone.
- Scroll down to the “Call Muting and Identification” section and tap on Silence Unknown Callers.
- Tap the toggle switch so it turns from grey (off) to green (on).
Important Warnings Before Using This Feature
While this feature is incredibly effective at stopping spam, it is a blunt instrument that requires you to actively manage your Contacts app.
Before turning it on, consider the following scenarios where a legitimate, important call might be silenced:
- Medical Professionals: Doctors, clinics, and pharmacies often call from private or unlisted numbers that are not saved in your phone.
- Delivery Drivers: Courier drivers calling from their personal mobile phones for gate codes or delivery instructions will be sent straight to voicemail.
- Job Interviews: If you have applied for jobs, recruiters will call from unknown corporate numbers.
- Emergencies: If a family member loses their phone and borrows a stranger’s phone to call you, the call will be muted.
If you are expecting an important call from an unknown entity, you must remember to go back into Settings and temporarily toggle the feature off. Otherwise, the silenced calls will simply appear as a silent notification in your “Recents” tab, and you will have to rely on them leaving a voicemail.
