How to Change the Call Audio Routing to Speaker Automatically on iPhone

When you answer a phone call or FaceTime audio call on your iPhone, iOS automatically routes the sound to the small earpiece at the top of the device. If you want to use the loudspeaker, you have to pull the phone away from your face and manually tap the “Speaker” icon on the screen. However, if you have mobility issues, frequently work with your hands, or simply prefer taking all your calls hands-free, this default behaviour can be highly inconvenient.

What is Call Audio Routing?

Call Audio Routing is an accessibility feature buried deep within the iPhone’s settings. It dictates exactly where the audio should go the exact moment a call connects. By default, it is set to “Automatic,” meaning it uses the earpiece unless it detects a connected Bluetooth headset or CarPlay system. We can force it to default to the loudspeaker every single time.

How to Force Calls to the Speakerphone

You will need to adjust settings within the Accessibility menu, not the standard Phone or Sound settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
  4. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Touch menu and select Call Audio Routing.
  5. You will see three options: Automatic, Bluetooth Headset, and Speaker. Tap on Speaker to place a blue checkmark next to it.

How This Changes Your Calling Experience

Once enabled, the behaviour of your phone will change immediately.

  • Answering Calls: When someone rings you and you tap the green “Accept” button, the call will instantly connect via the loud bottom speakers. You do not need to press any extra buttons.
  • Making Calls: When you dial a number and hit call, it will begin ringing on the loudspeaker immediately.
  • FaceTime: This setting also applies to FaceTime Audio calls and third-party VoIP apps like WhatsApp or Skype calls.

If you are in a quiet public place and need privacy for a specific call, you can still switch back to the earpiece. Simply tap the highlighted “Speaker” icon on the active call screen to turn it off, and hold the phone to your ear normally.
