Apple introduced the ability to deeply customise the iPhone Lock Screen, allowing users to add informative widgets, change font styles, and create multiple unique lock screens for different contexts. This feature transforms the Lock Screen from a simple clock into a personalised dashboard that displays live information such as weather, calendar events, and fitness progress at a glance.
Why Customise Your iOS Lock Screen?
A customised Lock Screen provides immediate access to the information you check most frequently without requiring you to unlock your device and open an app. By adding widgets and adjusting the visual style, you can tailor your iPhone to match your personal aesthetic while improving your daily productivity.
Step 1: Access the Lock Screen Editor
To begin customising, you need to access the dedicated editing interface directly from your Lock Screen.
- Wake your iPhone by tapping the screen or raising it.
- Ensure the device is unlocked via Face ID or Touch ID, but do not swipe up to go to the Home Screen.
- Press and hold anywhere on the empty space of the Lock Screen until the interface shrinks and the Customise button appears at the bottom.
- Tap the blue + icon in the bottom right corner to create a completely new Lock Screen, or tap Customise to edit your current one.
Step 2: Choose a Wallpaper and Font Style
The visual foundation of your custom Lock Screen is the wallpaper and the clock typography.
- If creating a new screen, select a wallpaper from the gallery. You can choose from Photos, Weather, Astronomy, or various dynamic colours and patterns.
- Tap on the large digital clock at the top of the screen.
- A menu will appear allowing you to select different font styles and adjust the colour of the text to complement your chosen wallpaper.
Step 3: Add and Arrange Lock Screen Widgets
Widgets are the most functional part of the customisation process, providing live data updates.
- Tap the rectangular Add Widgets area located immediately below the clock.
- A menu will slide up showing available widgets from your installed apps.
- Tap or drag widgets into the widget area. You can add up to four small square widgets, two larger rectangular widgets, or a combination of both.
- You can also tap the date area directly above the clock to add a single inline widget, such as your next alarm or current weather conditions.
- Once you are satisfied with your layout, tap the X to close the widget menu, then tap Done in the top right corner to save your custom Lock Screen.
You can create multiple Lock Screens and easily switch between them by pressing and holding your current Lock Screen and swiping left or right, allowing you to have different setups for work, weekends, or travel.
