The Bookmarks Bar in Google Chrome is a fantastic tool for keeping your most important websites just one click away. However, because the bar is only as wide as your computer screen, it can only hold about 10 or 15 links before it runs out of space.
If you have dozens of websites you need to save, the best way to keep your browser organized is by creating Bookmark Folders. Instead of having five different links for your bank, credit card, and investment accounts taking up space on the bar, you can group them all into a single “Finances” drop-down folder.
How to Create a Bookmark Folder
You can create a new folder directly from the Bookmarks Bar itself.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Ensure your Bookmarks Bar is visible. (If you don’t see it, press Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows, or Cmd+Shift+B on Mac to turn it on).
- Right-click anywhere on the blank, empty space of the Bookmarks Bar.
- From the drop-down menu, select Add folder…
- A small window will pop up. Type a name for your new folder (e.g., “Work Projects” or “Recipes”).
- Click the blue Save button.
The new folder will instantly appear on your Bookmarks Bar. It will look like a tiny gray file folder.
How to Move Existing Bookmarks into a Folder
Now that you have a folder, you need to put things inside it.
The easiest way to organize your existing bookmarks is simply to drag and drop them. Click and hold any existing bookmark on your bar, drag your mouse over top of the new folder, and let go of the mouse button. The bookmark will drop inside.
How to Save a New Website Directly to a Folder
If you are currently looking at a brand new website and you want to save it straight into your new folder, you can bypass the Bookmarks Bar entirely.
- While viewing the website, look at the far right side of your address bar.
- Click the Star icon (Bookmark this tab).
- A small menu will drop down. You will see the Name of the website, and below that, the Folder.
- Click the Folder drop-down menu and select your new folder (e.g., “Recipes”).
- Click Done.
The next time you want to visit that website, simply click the “Recipes” folder on your Bookmarks Bar, and a drop-down list will appear showing you every single link you have saved inside. This method allows you to store hundreds of organized bookmarks without cluttering your screen.
