When your Mac starts crashing unexpectedly, the cooling fans run at maximum speed for no reason, or the battery refuses to hold a charge, determining the root cause can be frustrating. While software bugs are often to blame, physical hardware failure is always a possibility. Before you spend time wiping your hard drive or paying for a Genius Bar appointment, you should ask the Mac to physically test itself.
Every modern Mac contains a hidden, built-in tool called Apple Diagnostics (formerly known as Apple Hardware Test). This utility bypasses macOS entirely to run a low-level interrogation of your logic board, memory, battery, and sensors to detect physical failures.
Preparing Your Mac for Testing
Apple Diagnostics requires a clean environment to ensure accurate sensor readings.
- Shut down your Mac completely (Apple Menu > Shut Down).
- Disconnect all external devices. This includes USB hubs, external hard drives, printers, and secondary monitors. Leave only your keyboard, mouse, and power cable connected.
- Ensure the Mac is resting on a hard, flat surface with good ventilation. (Do not run the test with the laptop on a bed or pillow, as it may trigger a false overheating error).
How to Launch Apple Diagnostics
The method to access this hidden tool depends on whether your Mac uses an Intel processor or Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3).
For Apple Silicon Macs:\n
- Press and hold the Power button on your Mac.
- Keep holding the button as the screen turns on. Do not let go until you see “Loading startup options” and the screen displays a gear icon labeled “Options.”
- Press and hold the Command (⌘) and D keys simultaneously on your keyboard.
For Intel Macs:\n
- Press the Power button to turn on the Mac.
- Immediately press and hold the D key on your keyboard.
- Keep holding the D key until you see a progress bar or you are asked to choose a language. (If this fails, restart and hold Option + D to load the diagnostics tool over the internet).
Running the Test and Reading the Results
Once triggered, Apple Diagnostics will display a progress bar and state “Checking your Mac.” The process usually takes about 2 to 3 minutes. You may hear the internal cooling fans suddenly ramp up to maximum speed during this time; this is completely normal, as the tool is intentionally testing the fan motors.
When the test concludes, it will output a result code on the screen.
- ADP000: This is the code you want to see. It means no hardware issues were found. Your problems are almost certainly software-related.
- NDD001 / NDD002: Indicates a problem with the USB or Thunderbolt hardware.
- PPT001 / PPT004: Indicates the battery is failing and requires service.
- PFM001 – PFM007: Indicates a failure with the System Management Controller (SMC), which governs power and thermals.
If you receive any code other than ADP000, write it down immediately. When you contact Apple Support or visit an authorized repair center, providing this specific code will significantly speed up the repair process and potentially save you diagnostic fees.
