How to Translate Text Instantly Using the iPhone Camera

Traveling in a foreign country is an incredible experience, but it can quickly become overwhelming when you are trying to decipher a complex restaurant menu, read a confusing train station schedule, or understand a warning sign printed in a language you do not speak. You might assume you need to download a dedicated, third-party translation app or physically type every single foreign character into Google Translate. Fortunately, Apple has built a highly advanced optical character recognition (OCR) and translation engine directly into the native iPhone camera lens.

How to Translate Using the Viewfinder

You do not need to take a photograph to use this feature; the iPhone can translate the text live, right in front of your eyes.

  1. Open the standard Camera app on your iPhone.
  2. Point the camera lens directly at the foreign text (like a street sign or a menu).
  3. Hold the phone steady. You will notice a yellow bracket appear around the text as the iPhone recognizes the words.
  4. Look at the bottom right corner of the camera viewfinder. A small yellow icon that looks like a square with lines of text inside it (the Live Text icon) will appear. Tap it.

Viewing the Translation

The iPhone will instantly freeze the frame, highlighting all the text it successfully identified in bright yellow.

  1. A small pop-up menu will appear near the bottom of the screen. Tap the word Translate.
  2. If this is your first time using the feature, the iPhone might ask for permission to send the data to Apple’s translation servers. Tap “Continue.”

The magic happens instantly. The iPhone will digitally erase the foreign language from the sign or menu on your screen and seamlessly overlay the English translation in its place, matching the font size and background color as closely as possible. You can even tap the “Play” button in the menu to have Siri read the translated text out loud, which is incredibly helpful for learning the correct pronunciation.
