How to Automatically Reply to Text Messages When Driving on iPhone

Checking a text message while driving is incredibly dangerous, but the social pressure to reply immediately can be overwhelming, especially if it is a spouse or a boss asking a time-sensitive question. To eliminate this pressure, Apple built a dedicated “Driving Focus” mode into the iPhone. When activated, it silences all incoming notifications and automatically replies to anyone who texts you, letting them know you are behind the wheel and will respond later.

How to Set Up the Driving Focus

Before you can use the auto-reply feature, you must configure the Driving Focus profile.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on Focus.
  3. If you do not see “Driving” in the list of profiles, tap the + icon in the top right corner, select Driving, and follow the brief setup prompts.
  4. Once created, tap on Driving to open its specific settings menu.

How to Customize Your Auto-Reply Message

By default, Apple provides a generic response, but you can customize it to sound like you.

  1. Scroll down to the “Options” section and tap on Auto-Reply.
  2. At the top of the screen, you must choose who receives the automated message when they text you. Your options are:
    • No One (Disables the feature)
    • Recents (Anyone you have texted in the last two days)
    • Favorites (Only people in your VIP contacts list)
    • All Contacts (Anyone saved in your phonebook)
  3. Tap All Contacts for maximum coverage.
  4. Look at the “Auto-Reply Message” text box at the bottom. Tap it, delete the default text, and type your own custom message (e.g., “Hey, I’m currently driving. My phone is on silent, but I will read this as soon as I park.”)

How to Make It Activate Automatically

You do not have to remember to turn this feature on every time you start your car.

  1. Tap the back arrow (< Driving) in the top left corner to return to the main Driving Focus menu.
  2. Scroll down to the “Turn On Automatically” section and tap While Driving.
  3. Select Automatically (which uses your phone’s motion sensors to detect driving speed) or When Connected to Car Bluetooth.

Now, the second you start driving, your iPhone will silently shift into gear alongside you, managing your communications and keeping your eyes safely on the road.
