When your iPhone rings from across the room, the default marimba or reflection chime tells you someone is calling, but it doesn’t tell you if you actually need to get up from the couch. It could be your spouse with an emergency, or it could be a telemarketer. By assigning specific, custom ringtones to the most important people in your life, you can instantly identify who is calling without ever looking at the screen.
How to Set a Custom Ringtone
You do not need to download any third-party apps to do this; the feature is built directly into the core iOS Contacts system.
- Open the Phone app or the dedicated Contacts app on your iPhone.
- Scroll through your list and tap on the name of the person you want to customize (e.g., your spouse, boss, or child).
- In the top right corner of their contact card, tap Edit.
- Scroll down slightly until you see the row labeled Ringtone (it will say “Default” next to it). Tap on it.
You are now in the sound selection menu. Scroll down past the vibration settings and the “Tone Store” to see the list of available sounds. Apple includes dozens of high-quality options.
- Tap on a sound to hear a preview. If you don’t like the modern options, tap “Classic” at the bottom to access older, louder alarms like the Old Car Horn or the Rotary Phone.
- Once you have selected a distinct sound, tap Done in the top right corner.
- Tap Done one more time on the main contact card to save your changes.
Assigning Custom Text Tones
While you are editing the contact, you can apply the exact same logic to their text messages. This is incredibly useful for distinguishing a casual group chat notification from a direct text message from your manager.
In the Edit menu of their contact card, right below the Ringtone option, you will see Text Tone. Tap it, and select a distinct, short chime. A sudden “Ding” for everyone else, and a distinct “Glass” shatter for your boss, ensures you prioritize the right notifications.
Emergency Bypass (For Critical Contacts)
If you put your phone in “Do Not Disturb” mode at night to sleep, it will silence all custom ringtones and text tones. However, if you are setting a custom tone for an elderly parent or a child, you likely want them to break through that silence in an emergency.
At the very top of the Ringtone selection menu (where you picked the sound), there is a toggle switch labeled Emergency Bypass. If you turn this on, this specific person’s custom ringtone will play at full volume, even if your iPhone is switched to silent mode or Do Not Disturb is active.
