How to Connect Bluetooth Headphones to Your Mac

Apple AirPods seamlessly connect to a Mac through the magic of iCloud synchronization, requiring almost zero configuration. However, if you want to connect a pair of third-party Bluetooth headphones—such as Sony noise-canceling over-ears, Bose earbuds, or a generic gaming headset—you must manually pair them to your Mac using the system’s Bluetooth settings.

Step 1: Put Your Headphones in Pairing Mode

Your Mac cannot find your headphones if they are not actively broadcasting their availability. This is the most common point of failure.

  • Simply turning the headphones on is rarely enough; they will just try to reconnect to the last device they were used with (like your phone).
  • You must force them into Pairing Mode.
  • For most over-ear headphones, this requires pressing and holding the power button for 5 to 10 seconds until a small LED light starts flashing rapidly (usually blue or red/blue).
  • For earbuds, this often requires placing both earbuds inside their charging case, leaving the lid open, and pressing a small button on the back of the case until a light flashes.
  • If you are unsure, consult the manual for your specific brand of headphones to find the pairing mode sequence.

Step 2: Connect via Mac System Settings

Once the headphones are flashing and broadcasting their signal, you must tell your Mac to look for them.

  1. Click the Apple Logo in the top left corner of your Mac’s screen.
  2. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
  3. Click on Bluetooth in the left sidebar.
  4. Ensure the main Bluetooth toggle switch is turned On.
  5. Look at the “My Devices” or “Other Devices” list at the bottom of the window. Your Mac is constantly scanning the area. Within a few seconds, the name of your headphones (e.g., “Sony WH-1000XM4”) should appear in the list.
  6. Click the Connect button next to the headphone’s name.

The headphones will beep or play a chime in your ear, and the status in the Mac menu will change to “Connected.”

Step 3: Ensuring the Audio is Routed Properly

Sometimes, even though the headphones are successfully connected, your Mac will stubbornly continue playing music out of its internal speakers.

To fix this, you must manually select the headphones as the output device.

  1. Look at the menu bar at the top right of your screen (near the Wi-Fi and battery icons).
  2. Click the Control Center icon (it looks like two small toggle switches).
  3. Click the Sound module.
  4. Under the “Output” section, you will see a list of available speakers. Click on the name of your newly connected Bluetooth headphones.

All system audio, YouTube videos, and Zoom calls will now route directly into your ears.
