How to Completely Turn Off the Windows 11 Firewall

The built-in Windows Defender Firewall is your computer’s first line of defence against malicious network traffic and hackers attempting to access your system. However, if you are trying to configure a complex local server, set up older multiplayer video games on a LAN network, or install a third-party antivirus suite, the default firewall can often incorrectly block your connections. In these highly specific troubleshooting scenarios, you may need to temporarily disable the firewall to test if it is the source of the problem.

How to Disable the Firewall Safely

You can turn off the firewall directly through the Windows Security dashboard.

  1. Click the Start button on your taskbar and type Windows Security.
  2. Hit Enter to open the app (it features a blue shield icon).
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Firewall & network protection.
  4. You will see three different network profiles: Domain network, Private network, and Public network. The one you are currently using will have (active) written next to it.
  5. Click on your active network profile.
  6. Look for the toggle switch directly under the “Microsoft Defender Firewall” heading.
  7. Click the switch to turn it Off.
  8. A User Account Control (UAC) prompt will appear asking for administrator permission. Click Yes.

The moment you click Yes, the firewall will completely drop its shields. You can now test your software or local network connection. If your software suddenly works perfectly, you know the firewall was blocking it.

Warning: You should never leave the Windows 11 Firewall disabled permanently, especially on a Public network like a coffee shop Wi-Fi. The exact second you finish your troubleshooting test, you must return to this menu and toggle the switch back to On to ensure your PC remains protected against network intrusions.
