How to Change the Default Font in Google Docs for All New Documents

By default, every new Google Document you create uses the “Arial” font at size 11. If your company requires “Times New Roman” or you personally prefer reading “Calibri”, manually changing the font every single time you start a new project is incredibly frustrating. Fortunately, you can change the default font settings permanently for your entire Google account.

Step-by-Step Instructions

To change the default font, we first need to create a template of how we want the text to look.

  1. Open a blank Google Document.
  2. Type a few words into the document (e.g., “This is my new font”).
  3. Highlight the text you just typed.
  4. Using the toolbar at the top of the screen, change the font, size, colour, and line spacing to exactly what you want your new default to be.
  5. With the text still highlighted, click on Format in the top menu bar.
  6. Hover over Paragraph styles > Normal text, and click on Update ‘Normal text’ to match.
  7. Now, click on Format again.
  8. Hover over Paragraph styles > Options, and click on Save as my default styles.

Verifying the Change

A small notification will appear at the top of your screen confirming that your default styles have been saved. You can now delete the sample text. Every new document you create from this point forward will automatically start with your preferred font settings, saving you precious time.
