How to Fix a Chromebook That Won’t Turn On

Chromebooks are known for their simplicity and reliability, which makes it all the more terrifying when you open the lid and are greeted by a completely black, unresponsive screen.

Before you assume the motherboard is fried or the screen is broken, you should know that Chrome OS has built-in hardware reset commands designed specifically for this scenario. Here is how to fix a Chromebook that won’t turn on.

1. Check the Charging LED Indicator

The first step is to determine if the Chromebook is receiving power at all. Plug the charger directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips for this test) and plug it into your device.

Look at the tiny LED light next to the charging port:

  • If there is no light: Your charger or the charging port is broken. Try using a different USB-C charger, or try plugging the charger into the USB-C port on the opposite side of the laptop if it has one.
  • If the light is blinking: The battery is completely, deeply depleted. Leave the Chromebook plugged in for at least 30 minutes before trying to turn it on again.
  • If the light is solid (orange or white): The device is receiving power, meaning the issue is likely a software crash.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

If the charging light is solid but the screen remains black, the Chromebook is likely stuck in a frozen “sleep” state. You need to forcefully cut the power to the internal hardware and reboot the controller chip.

  1. Ensure the Chromebook is plugged into the wall charger.
  2. Look at the top row of your keyboard. Find the Refresh button (it looks like a circular arrow, usually located above the number 3 or 4).
  3. Press and hold the Refresh button.
  4. While holding Refresh, tap the Power button once.
  5. Release the Refresh button when the Chromebook starts up.

This “Refresh + Power” combination is the golden rule of Chromebook troubleshooting. It physically resets the hardware without deleting any of your personal files.

3. Remove All External Devices

Sometimes, a faulty USB accessory can cause a power short that prevents the Chromebook from booting up as a safety precaution.

Unplug everything from the laptop. This includes USB mice, external hard drives, SD cards, and even headphones. Once the laptop is completely bare, try the “Refresh + Power” hard reset combination again.

4. The “Missing OS” Screen

If your Chromebook turns on but immediately displays a white screen that says “Chrome OS is missing or damaged,” your operating system has corrupted itself.

To fix this, you will need a separate, working computer (Windows, Mac, or another Chromebook) and a blank USB flash drive (at least 8GB). You must download the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension from the Chrome Web Store on the working computer, use it to create a recovery USB drive, and then plug that drive into your broken Chromebook to reinstall the operating system.
