How to Turn Off Chrome Notifications in Windows

Have you ever visited a news website or a blog, only to be immediately greeted by a pop-up asking if the site can “Show notifications”? If you accidentally clicked “Allow,” your computer is likely now bombarded with annoying slide-in banners every time that website publishes a new article—even when Google Chrome is closed.

These notifications integrate directly into the Windows operating system, making them incredibly intrusive. Fortunately, you can easily revoke these permissions and silence the websites permanently. Here is how to turn off Chrome notifications in Windows.

Step 1: Open Chrome’s Site Settings

The permissions for all websites are managed centrally within Google Chrome’s main settings menu.

1. Open Google Chrome on your PC.
2. Click the three vertical dots (the Chrome menu) in the top-right corner of the window.
3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
4. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
5. In the middle of the screen, click on Site settings.
6. Scroll down to the “Permissions” section and click on Notifications.

Step 2: Remove the Offending Websites

You are now on the master Notifications page. This page is divided into two main sections: websites that are Not allowed to send notifications, and websites that Allowed to send notifications.

1. Scroll down to the Allowed to send notifications list. This is the list of culprits spamming your desktop.
2. Locate the specific website that is bothering you (e.g., cnn.com or a spammy blog).
3. Click the three vertical dots next to that website’s name.
4. Select Remove from the small pop-up menu.

By clicking Remove, you delete the permission entirely. The next time you visit that website, it will ask you for permission all over again. If you never plan to visit the site again, this is the best option.

Alternative Option: If you select Block instead of Remove, Chrome will actively remember that you hate notifications from this site and will never even bother asking you for permission again.

Step 3: Stop Websites from Asking for Permission

If you are tired of clicking “Block” every time you visit a new website, you can use the nuclear option. You can command Google Chrome to automatically deny all notification requests from every website on the internet, forever.

1. Stay on the exact same Notifications settings page you just used.
2. Scroll to the very top of the page to the “Default behavior” section.
3. Select the radio button next to Don’t allow sites to send notifications.

That is it. You will never see a “Show notifications” pop-up in Google Chrome again, and your Windows desktop will remain peaceful and uninterrupted.
