How to Check Your iPhone Storage Space

Is your iPhone suddenly refusing to download new apps, take photos, or install the latest iOS update? The most common culprit is a lack of available storage space. Before you start blindly deleting photos and messages, you should check exactly what is eating up your iPhone’s memory.

How to View Your iPhone Storage

Apple provides a detailed, colour-coded breakdown of your device’s storage directly within the Settings app.

  • Unlock your iPhone and open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and tap on General.
  • Tap on iPhone Storage.

Understanding the Storage Screen

When you open this screen, it may take a few seconds to calculate your usage. Once loaded, you will see a bar graph at the top.

  • The graph shows your total capacity (e.g., “64 GB” or “128 GB”) and how much of it is currently used.
  • The colours represent different categories of data: Apps (Red), Photos (Yellow), Media (Blue), Messages (Green), and System Data (Grey).

Directly below the graph, Apple will provide “Recommendations” on how to quickly free up space, such as “Offload Unused Apps” or “Review Large Attachments” in Messages.

Managing Individual Apps

If you scroll down further, you will see a list of every app installed on your iPhone, sorted by the amount of space they occupy from largest to smallest.

If you tap on an app in this list (like Safari, Podcasts, or a heavy mobile game), you are given two options to reclaim space:

  • Offload App: This deletes the core application file to free up space but keeps all your personal documents and data intact. If you reinstall the app later, your data will still be there.
  • Delete App: This completely removes the app and all related data permanently.
