How to Add a Table of Contents to a Google Doc

Navigating through a 50-page business proposal or a lengthy academic thesis can be a nightmare for your readers if they have to scroll endlessly to find a specific section. Adding a Table of Contents (TOC) solves this problem by providing clickable links that jump directly to the right page. Google Docs makes generating a dynamic Table of Contents incredibly easy, provided you set up your document correctly first.

Step 1: Format Your Headings

The most common mistake people make is typing a title, making it bold, and increasing the font size manually. Google Docs cannot read manual formatting to build a TOC. You must use the official built-in “Styles” menu.

  1. Highlight the text you want to use as a section title (e.g., “Introduction” or “Chapter 1”).
  2. In the toolbar at the top, look for the drop-down menu that usually says Normal text.
  3. Click on it and select Heading 1 for main chapters, Heading 2 for sub-sections, and Heading 3 for minor sections.
  4. Repeat this process for every title throughout your entire document.

Step 2: Insert the Table of Contents

Once all your headings are properly formatted using the Styles menu, generating the table takes just three clicks.

  1. Click exactly where you want the Table of Contents to appear (usually on a blank page right after the title page).
  2. Click on Insert in the top menu bar.
  3. Scroll down to the very bottom and hover over Table of contents.
  4. You will see three layout options:
    • Plain Text: Just the titles, without page numbers or dotted lines.
    • Dotted (with page numbers): The traditional book style, with dotted lines connecting the title to the page number on the right.
    • Links (Blue text): Removes page numbers entirely, but turns every title into a blue clickable hyperlink. This is best for documents meant to be read online rather than printed.

Click your preferred style, and Google Docs will instantly scan your document and generate the complete table.

Step 3: Updating the Table of Contents

As you continue writing, you might add new chapters or push existing chapters onto different pages. The Table of Contents does not update automatically as you type. You must tell it to refresh.

  1. Click anywhere inside the Table of Contents box.
  2. A small circular Refresh arrow icon will appear in the top-left corner of the box.
  3. Click that icon.

Google Docs will instantly rescan your document, add any new headings you created, and update all the page numbers.

Conclusion

Taking a few seconds to format your headings using the Styles menu allows Google Docs to do all the heavy lifting for you. A dynamic, clickable Table of Contents gives your document a highly professional finish and drastically improves the reading experience.
