Why You Might Need to Export iPhone Contacts to CSV

Unlike Android, the iPhone does not have a built-in “Export to CSV” button in the native Contacts app. However, exporting your contacts to a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file is incredibly useful if you need to import your address book into Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or a third-party CRM system. A CSV file acts as a universal format that almost any database or spreadsheet application can read.

While you cannot do this directly from your iPhone screen, you can easily achieve this using iCloud on any web browser.

Step 1: Sync Your iPhone Contacts to iCloud

Before you can export your contacts, you must ensure they are securely backed up and synced to your iCloud account.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Tap your Name/Apple ID at the top of the screen.
3. Select iCloud.
4. Under “Apps Using iCloud,” tap Show All.
5. Find Contacts and toggle the switch to the ON position. If asked, choose to “Merge” your contacts.

Step 2: Export Contacts as a vCard via iCloud.com

Apple allows you to export your contacts from iCloud as a vCard (.vcf) file. We will generate this file first, and then convert it to a CSV.

1. Open a web browser on your Mac or Windows PC and navigate to iCloud.com.
2. Sign in with the same Apple ID used on your iPhone.
3. Click on the Contacts app icon.
4. In the bottom-left corner of the screen, click the Gear icon (Settings) and choose Select All. (Alternatively, hold Cmd + A on Mac or Ctrl + A on Windows).
5. Click the Gear icon again and select Export vCard.
6. A file named something like “iCloud vCards.vcf” will download to your computer.

Step 3: Convert the vCard to a CSV File

Since Apple only exports in vCard format, you need to convert it into a CSV file to use it in Excel or Google Sheets. There are two primary methods to do this:

Method A: Use a Free Online Converter (Fastest)

If your contacts do not contain highly sensitive information, you can use a free online conversion tool.

1. Go to a reputable vCard to CSV converter website, such as AConvert or vCard to LDIF/CSV Converter.
2. Upload the .vcf file you downloaded from iCloud.
3. Select CSV as the output format.
4. Click Convert and download your new CSV file.

Method B: Import to Google Contacts (Most Secure)

If you prefer not to upload your contacts to a random website, you can use your Google Account to securely convert the format.

1. Navigate to Google Contacts and sign in.
2. On the left sidebar, click Import.
3. Click Select file and upload your iCloud vCards.vcf file, then click Import.
4. Once imported, click Export from the left sidebar.
5. Select the contacts you just imported, choose Google CSV or Outlook CSV, and click Export.

Your iPhone contacts are now successfully saved as a CSV file, ready to be opened in Excel, Google Sheets, or uploaded to your desired platform.
