Taking Control of Your Digital Habits
In an age where social media apps and mobile games are engineered to be as addictive as possible, it is incredibly easy to lose hours of your day staring at your iPhone. If you find yourself endlessly scrolling through TikTok or Instagram when you should be working or sleeping, Apple has built a powerful tool directly into iOS to help you break the habit.
The Screen Time feature allows you to set hard daily time limits for specific apps or entire categories of apps (like “Social” or “Games”). Once you hit your designated limit, the iPhone will physically block you from opening the app until the next day. While you can always choose to bypass the limit if there is an emergency, the physical barrier of the block screen is often enough to break the scrolling trance.
Here is how to set up App Limits on your iPhone to reclaim your time and focus.
How to Set a Daily App Limit
You can set limits for a single problematic app, or you can group several apps together under one shared time limit.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Screen Time (it has a purple hourglass icon).
- If you have never used this feature before, tap Turn On Screen Time and follow the brief setup prompts.
- Under the “Limit Usage” section, tap on App Limits.
- Tap Add Limit.
- You will now see a list of app categories (Social, Games, Entertainment, etc.).
- To limit an entire category, tap the empty circle next to the category name.
- To limit a specific app, tap the small arrow next to the category name to expand the list, then select the individual app (e.g., Instagram).
- Tap Next in the top-right corner.
- Set your daily time allowance (e.g., 1 hour and 30 minutes).
- Optional: If you want different limits on the weekend, tap Customize Days to set a specific schedule.
- Ensure the toggle for Block at End of Limit is turned on.
- Tap Add in the top-right corner to save your limit.
What Happens When You Reach the Limit?
When you have 5 minutes remaining on your daily allowance, your iPhone will send you a standard push notification warning you that your time is almost up.
Once you hit the exact limit, the app will instantly close, and the screen will turn white with an hourglass icon. On your home screen, the app icon will appear dimmed with a small hourglass next to its name.
If you absolutely must access the app—perhaps you are in the middle of an important conversation—you can tap Ask for More Time on the block screen. This allows you to approve an extra 15 minutes, approve it for the entire day, or ignore the limit completely.
How to Lock Your Limits with a Passcode
If you lack the willpower to respect the limit and find yourself constantly tapping “Ignore Limit,” you can force yourself to enter a PIN code before bypassing the block. This is also the method parents use to restrict their children’s device usage.
- Go back to the main Screen Time menu in Settings.
- Scroll down and tap Lock Screen Time Settings (or “Use Screen Time Passcode” on older iOS versions).
- Create a 4-digit passcode. Crucially: Do not use your standard iPhone unlock PIN. Choose something different.
- You will be asked to enter your Apple ID credentials. This ensures you can reset the passcode if you ever forget it.
Now, whenever you hit an App Limit, the “Ask for More Time” button will require you to physically type in that 4-digit PIN before the app will open. This extra layer of friction is highly effective at stopping mindless scrolling.
How to Delete or Modify a Limit
If you find a limit is too restrictive, or if you have successfully broken your bad habit and no longer need the block, you can easily remove it.
- Go to Settings > Screen Time > App Limits.
- To temporarily disable all limits without deleting them, toggle the main App Limits switch at the top of the screen off.
- To delete a specific limit, swipe left on the limit in the list and tap the red Delete button.
