Taking Control of Your Search Results
SafeSearch is an automated filtering system designed to block explicit images, videos, and websites from appearing in your search engine results. It is an essential tool for parents, schools, and corporate networks looking to maintain a safe browsing environment. However, if you are an adult conducting research on sensitive topics, anatomy, or art, a strict SafeSearch filter can aggressively censor entirely legitimate websites, hindering your ability to find the information you need.
While Google dominates the search engine market, Microsoft Bing is deeply integrated into Windows 11, the Edge browser, and the increasingly popular Copilot AI features. By default, Bing applies a “Moderate” SafeSearch filter to all new users, which blocks explicit images and videos but allows some text results.
If you want unfiltered access to the web, you must manually disable this feature. Fortunately, Microsoft makes it easy to adjust these settings, provided your network administrator has not locked them down.
How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Desktop Browser)
If you are using a desktop or laptop computer, you can disable the filter directly from the Bing homepage using any web browser (Edge, Chrome, or Firefox).
- Open your preferred web browser and navigate to bing.com.
- Look at the top-right corner of the screen and click on the hamburger menu icon (the three horizontal lines).
- A drop-down menu will appear. Click on SafeSearch to open the quick settings panel.
- You will see three distinct filtering options:
- Strict: Filters explicit text, images, and videos from your results.
- Moderate: Filters explicit images and videos but not text. (This is the default setting).
- Off: Does not filter explicit content from your search results.
- Click the radio button next to Off.
- Click Save at the bottom of the panel.
Your search results will immediately update to reflect the new unrestricted settings.
How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Mobile Browser)
If you are searching on an iPhone or Android device using a mobile browser like Safari or Chrome, the interface is slightly more compressed.
- Go to bing.com on your mobile browser.
- Tap the hamburger menu icon (the three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
- Tap on Settings to expand the sub-menu.
- Tap on SafeSearch.
- You will be taken to a dedicated settings page. Select the Off option.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap the blue Save button. (If you do not tap Save, the setting will revert to Moderate when you leave the page).
How to Turn Off SafeSearch (Bing Mobile App)
If you prefer to use the official Microsoft Bing search app (often heavily promoted for its Copilot AI integration), the setting is located within the app’s profile menu.
- Open the Bing app on your smartphone.
- Tap your Profile icon (or the “Apps” icon) in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the main menu.
- Tap on Settings.
- Tap on Search.
- Tap on SafeSearch.
- Select Off from the list of options. The app will automatically save this preference.
Troubleshooting: Why is the “Off” Button Greyed Out?
If you attempt to follow these steps but find that the “Off” button is greyed out, locked, or completely missing, you do not have permission to change the setting. This happens for three common reasons:
1. You Are on a Managed Network: If you are browsing on a computer at work, school, or a public library, the IT administrator has likely enforced a strict SafeSearch policy at the router level. You cannot bypass this setting on their network.
2. Microsoft Family Safety is Enabled: If your Microsoft Account is designated as a “Child” account within a Microsoft Family Safety group, your parent or guardian has locked your search settings. Only the “Organiser” of the family group can change this restriction.
3. Windows Safety Settings: In some cases, Windows 11 itself enforces SafeSearch across the operating system. Open the Windows Settings app, go to Privacy & security, click on Search permissions, and ensure the SafeSearch setting there is also set to “Off.”
