Taking Your Address Book to a New Ecosystem
Moving away from Apple’s ecosystem and switching to a new Android smartphone can be incredibly liberating, but it also presents a few digital hurdles. Apple designs its services to work best when you stay within its walled garden. Consequently, while Apple provides an official “Move to iOS” app to help people leave Android, they do not offer a “Move to Android” app to help people leave the iPhone.
If you have spent years saving phone numbers, email addresses, and home addresses into your iPhone’s Contacts app, all that data is likely synced to Apple’s iCloud servers. You need to extract it and move it over to Google’s servers so your new Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel can read it.
Fortunately, moving your address book from an iPhone to an Android device is a straightforward process, and there are two primary ways to do it depending on whether you prefer an automated cloud sync or a manual file export.
Method 1: Syncing via Google Drive (The Easiest Method)
Google offers a built-in backup tool within the Google Drive app for iOS that is specifically designed to help users migrate from an iPhone to an Android device. This is the fastest and most reliable method.
- On your iPhone, open the App Store, search for Google Drive, and download the app.
- Open Google Drive and sign in using your primary Google Account (this must be the exact same Gmail address you intend to use on your new Android phone).
- Tap the Menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner of the app.
- Tap on Settings, then tap Backup.
- You will see a list of items Google can back up for you. Ensure the toggle switch next to Contacts is turned on. (You can also choose to back up Calendar events and Photos here if you wish).
- Tap the blue Start Backup button at the bottom of the screen.
- Google Drive will ask for permission to access your contacts. Tap OK.
The app will now scan your iPhone’s address book and upload every entry to Google Contacts. Depending on how many contacts you have, this could take a few minutes. Leave the app open until the progress bar reaches 100%.
Once the backup is complete, simply turn on your new Android phone and sign in with that same Google Account during the initial setup process. Your entire address book will automatically populate in the Android Contacts app.
Method 2: Exporting a vCard File from iCloud (The Manual Method)
If you do not want to install the Google Drive app on your iPhone, or if you want a physical backup file of your contacts to keep safe on your computer’s hard drive, you can manually export your address book directly from iCloud.
You will need a desktop computer or a laptop for this method; it is very difficult to execute on a smartphone.
- Open a web browser on your computer and navigate to iCloud.com.
- Sign in using your Apple ID and password. (You may need to enter a two-factor authentication code sent to your iPhone).
- From the grid of apps on the iCloud dashboard, click on Contacts.
- You will see a list of all your saved names. Look at the bottom left corner of the screen and click the gear icon (Settings).
- Click Select All from the pop-up menu. The entire list of names should now be highlighted in blue.
- Click the gear icon a second time, and select Export vCard…
A single file (usually named after the first contact in your list, followed by “and X others.vcf”) will instantly download to your computer’s Downloads folder.
Now that you have the raw data file, you must upload it to Google:
- Open a new tab in your web browser and navigate to contacts.google.com.
- Sign in with your Google Account.
- Look at the left-hand navigation sidebar and click Import.
- Click Select file, navigate to your computer’s Downloads folder, and choose the .vcf file you just downloaded from iCloud.
- Click Import.
Google will instantly process the file, and all your iPhone contacts will appear on the screen. The next time your Android phone connects to the internet, it will sync with Google and download the entire list automatically.
