Preparing Your Apple TV for a New Home
An Apple TV streaming box is essentially a tiny computer plugged directly into your television. Over months and years of use, it accumulates a massive amount of highly personal data. It holds the passwords to all your premium streaming services (like Netflix and Disney+), your Apple ID credentials, your iCloud photo library, and potentially even the billing details for your App Store purchases.
If you are planning to sell your Apple TV, give it to a friend, or trade it in for a newer 4K model, you absolutely must wipe this personal data first. Deleting apps manually is not sufficient, as your master Apple ID will remain logged into the core system.
To safely transfer ownership and ensure your privacy, you must perform a complete factory reset. This will securely erase the internal hard drive, log you out of all accounts, and return the software to its original, out-of-the-box state.
Method 1: Resetting via the Settings Menu (The Easiest Way)
If your Apple TV is functioning normally and you have the remote control in your hand, resetting the device takes only a few clicks from the main dashboard.
- Turn on your television and navigate to the Apple TV Home Screen.
- Use the remote to find and open the Settings app (the icon that looks like a silver gear).
- Scroll down and select System.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the System menu and select Reset.
You will now be presented with two distinct choices:
- Reset: This is the fastest option. It immediately wipes all your personal data, apps, and settings, returning the device to factory defaults. It does not require an internet connection.
- Reset and Update: This option wipes your data, but then it immediately downloads and installs the absolute latest version of tvOS from Apple’s servers. This is highly recommended if you are selling the device, as the new owner will appreciate having the latest software, but it requires a fast internet connection and takes significantly longer.
Select your preferred option. The screen will go black, and the white light on the front of the physical Apple TV box will begin flashing rapidly. Do not unplug the power cable during this process. Once it is finished, the TV will display the initial setup screen asking you to select a language. Your Apple TV is now completely wiped and safe to sell.
Method 2: Resetting via a Mac or PC (If the Apple TV is Unresponsive)
If your Apple TV is completely frozen, stuck on the Apple logo, or you have lost the remote control, you cannot use the on-screen menus. Fortunately, older Apple TV models (the Apple TV HD and earlier) have a secret port on the back that allows you to force a factory reset using a computer.
Note: This method does not work on the Apple TV 4K models, as Apple completely removed the USB port from the back of the device. If your 4K model is frozen, you must contact Apple Support.
- Unplug both the power cable and the HDMI cable from the back of the Apple TV.
- Look at the back of the Apple TV box. You will see a small USB-C port (or a Micro-USB port on very old models) sitting right beneath the HDMI port.
- Connect a compatible USB cable from that small port directly into your Mac or Windows PC.
- Crucial Step: If you are using a 3rd Generation Apple TV (or older), you must also plug the power cable back into the wall. If you are using an Apple TV HD (4th Generation), leave the power cable unplugged.
- Open Finder (on a Mac) or iTunes / Apple Devices app (on a Windows PC).
- Look in the left-hand sidebar for your Apple TV and click on it.
- Click the prominent Restore Apple TV button.
Your computer will automatically download the correct factory software from the internet, completely format the Apple TV’s hard drive, and reinstall the operating system from scratch. Once the process says “Complete” on your computer screen, you can unplug the USB cable.
