Why Schedule a Text Message?
We have all experienced it: you remember at 11:30 PM that you need to text a colleague or wish a friend a happy birthday. Sending the text immediately risks waking them up, but waiting until morning means you will probably forget entirely.
The solution is scheduling the text message. By writing the message now and instructing your phone to send it later, you ensure the information is delivered at an appropriate, socially acceptable time without requiring you to remember to press send.
Requirements for Scheduling Texts
While some Android manufacturers (like Samsung) include scheduling features in their proprietary texting apps, the most reliable and universal method across all Android devices is using Google Messages.
Google Messages is the default SMS/RCS application on Google Pixel phones and many modern Android devices. If your phone uses a different app (like Samsung Messages), you can download Google Messages for free from the Google Play Store and set it as your default SMS app.
How to Schedule a Message in Google Messages
Scheduling a text is a built-in feature that only requires one extra step before hitting send.
- Open the Google Messages app on your Android phone.
- Start a new conversation or open an existing chat with the person you want to text.
- Type your complete message into the text box at the bottom of the screen.
- Instead of tapping the Send button (the paper plane icon), press and hold the Send button for about two seconds.
- A "Schedule send" menu will pop up from the bottom of the screen.
- You will see three quick suggestions (e.g., "Later today, 6:00 PM" or "Tomorrow, 8:00 AM"). If one of these fits your needs, tap it.
- If you need a specific date and time, tap Pick date and time.
- Use the calendar to select the exact day, tap Next, then use the clock interface to choose the exact time you want the message delivered. Tap Save.
- The Send button will now display a tiny clock icon. Tap this new Send button to lock in the schedule.
Your message will appear in the chat interface with a small clock icon and italicized text reading "Scheduled message," confirming it is queued in the system.
How to Edit, Send Early, or Cancel a Scheduled Text
If you made a typo or changed your mind after scheduling the message, you can easily alter it as long as the delivery time has not yet passed.
- Open the chat containing the scheduled message.
- Locate the scheduled message (it will be separated from the rest of the chat by a scheduled timestamp).
- Tap the clock icon next to the message.
- A menu will appear with three options:
- Update message: This allows you to edit the text or change the scheduled delivery time.
- Send now: This immediately cancels the schedule and sends the text right now.
- Delete message: This permanently cancels the scheduled send and deletes the drafted text.
Important Limitations to Remember
While scheduling texts is incredibly useful, it is important to understand how the technology works to ensure your messages actually arrive.
- Your phone must be turned on: The scheduled message is stored locally on your device, not on your carrier’s servers. If your phone is powered off or the battery dies at the scheduled delivery time, the message will not be sent.
- You need a network connection: Similarly, your phone must have an active cellular signal or Wi-Fi connection at the exact moment the message is scheduled to deploy. If you are on a flight in airplane mode, the message will fail to send.
By using the schedule send feature, you can manage your communication on your own time without inconveniencing the recipient.
