How to Turn Off Time to Stand Reminders on Apple Watch

Apple Watch is engineered to promote daily physical activity through its iconic three Activity Rings: Move, Exercise, and Stand. By default, the watchOS activity monitor encourages users to stand up and move around for at least one minute during 12 different hours of the day, delivering a haptic tap on the wrist at 50 minutes past the hour with the alert: “Time to stand!”

While Stand reminders help encourage healthy movement habits for desk-bound office workers, frequent hourly alerts can be disruptive during executive board meetings, university exams, long cinema screenings, or air travel. Users with temporary injuries, mobility challenges, or those working focused creative shifts often prefer to track their daily movement without recurring hourly prompts.

How the Stand Goal Works on Apple Watch

The Apple Watch tracks standing using its built-in accelerometer and gyroscope sensors:

  • The watch awards one Stand hour when it senses continuous physical movement and vertical arm orientation for at least 60 seconds within a sixty-minute block.
  • If you have not recorded movement by the fiftieth minute of an hour, watchOS triggers the Stand reminder notification.
  • Disabling Stand reminder notifications does not stop the Apple Watch from counting Stand hours. Your watch will continue to track standing time silently and close your blue Stand ring whenever you move.

Turning Off Stand Reminders Directly on Apple Watch

You can disable hourly stand alerts directly on your wrist without using your iPhone:

  1. Press the Digital Crown to open the app grid or list view on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap the Settings app (represented by the grey gear icon).
  3. Scroll down and tap Activity.
  4. Locate the Stand Reminders toggle.
  5. Tap the switch to turn it Off (the toggle changes from green to grey).

Your Apple Watch will immediately suppress all subsequent “Time to stand!” notifications.

Turning Off Stand Reminders Using Your iPhone

If you prefer configuring watch notifications on your paired iPhone:

  1. Open the Watch app on your paired iPhone.
  2. Ensure the My Watch tab is selected in the bottom-left corner.
  3. Scroll down and tap Activity.
  4. Locate the Stand Reminders setting.
  5. Tap the toggle to switch it Off.

The preference synchronizes instantly across your Apple Watch via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Customising Notification Muting Options

If you want to silence reminders temporarily rather than disabling them permanently:

  • Mute for Today: In the iPhone Watch app under Notifications > Activity, you can configure notifications to mute for the remainder of the calendar day.
  • Theater Mode: Swiping up to open Control Centre on your Apple Watch and tapping the drama masks icon silences all audible notifications and prevents the screen from waking when you raise your wrist.
  • Focus Modes: Linking your Apple Watch to an iPhone Focus mode (such as Work, Do Not Disturb, or Sleep) automatically suppresses Activity notifications during scheduled hours.

Disabling Stand reminders allows Apple Watch owners to maintain undisturbed focus while preserving full tracking metrics for their daily Activity rings.
