Browsing the web on an iPhone frequently triggers repetitive permission popups. Many shopping portals, news sites, and local business directories display intrusive prompts asking to access your precise geographical location as soon as their homepage loads. While location sharing can be helpful when searching for nearby restaurants or navigation directions, having multiple websites request your physical coordinates daily feels intrusive and can compromise your personal privacy.
Fortunately, iOS and iPadOS give you complete control over browser location permissions. You can permanently stop websites from asking to use your location in Safari, deny location requests by default, or customise access on a per-website basis. In this tutorial, we explain how to disable location prompts globally in Safari on iPhone, manage individual website permissions, and protect your privacy.
Why Stop Location Requests in Safari?
Toggling website location prompts off delivers several key privacy and browsing advantages:
- Distraction-Free Browsing: Prevents irritating modal popups and alerts from interrupting your reading or shopping experience on every new domain.
- Enhanced Geographic Privacy: Prevents third-party trackers, advertising aggregators, and marketing networks from recording your exact coordinates or building location-based browsing profiles.
- Reduced Battery Drain: GPS and CoreLocation hardware sensors consume significant battery power when actively querying satellite and cellular towers for high-precision geolocation.
- Granular Control: Disabling prompts does not stop you from manually enabling location access for specific trusted sites (such as Google Maps or food delivery services) whenever you choose.
How to Stop Websites from Asking for Location in Safari
To block Safari from ever displaying location permission popups on your iPhone, adjust the setting through the iOS Settings app:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Safari.
- Scroll down to the Settings for Websites section and tap Location.
- You will see three available permission options for websites accessed through Safari:
- Ask: (Default) Safari prompts you with a dialogue box every time an unconfigured website requests your location.
- Deny: Safari silently rejects all location requests from websites without showing any prompt or banner.
- Allow: Grants automatic location access to all websites without prompting (not recommended for privacy).
- Select Deny to block all future location requests automatically.
Once Deny is selected, websites attempting to call the HTML5 Geolocation API will immediately receive a permission-denied response. No popups or modal dialogues will ever interrupt your browsing.
How to Manage Location Permissions for Individual Websites
If you prefer to allow certain essential websites (such as local transport timetables or banking portals) to use your location while blocking all others, you can configure individual site rules:
- Open Safari and navigate to the website you wish to configure.
- Tap the Page Settings icon on the left side of the address bar (represented by the
aAicon or puzzle/controls icon depending on your iOS version). - Tap Website Settings from the popup menu.
- Under the permissions list, tap Location.
- Choose your preferred setting specifically for this domain: Ask, Deny, or Allow.
- Tap Done in the top-right corner to save your changes.
Any individual website setting you configure here overrides the global Safari default, giving you total flexibility over which domains can access your position.
How to Disable Safari Location Access at the System Level
If you want to ensure that Safari and any website rendered within it can never access your device’s GPS hardware under any circumstances, you can revoke Safari’s access entirely within iOS Location Services:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Navigate to Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Ensure Location Services is toggled on, then scroll through the list of installed applications and select Safari Websites.
- Under Allow Location Access, choose Never.
- (Optional) If you ever grant location access in the future, you can also toggle off Precise Location. This provides websites with an approximate area (such as your city or town) rather than your exact street address.
How to Clear Saved Website Location Permissions
If you previously allowed a website to access your location and want to reset all stored preferences:
- Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced (located at the very bottom).
- Tap Website Data.
- Tap Remove All Website Data, or swipe left on specific domain entries to delete their stored cookies, local storage, and cached permissions.
