How to Pin Folders to Quick Access in Windows 11 File Explorer

Navigating through deeply nested directory trees across internal hard drives, network shares, and cloud folders every time you want to save or open a file is an unnecessary productivity drain. In Windows 11, File Explorer centralises frequent navigation around the Home section, which features a dedicated Quick Access pinned list in both the left-hand navigation pane and the primary window.

By pinning your active client folders, media directories, or coding repositories to Quick Access, you can jump to essential files with a single click from any File Explorer window or file upload dialogue box. In this guide, we walk through how to pin and unpin folders in Windows 11, reorder pinned items, prevent Windows from automatically cluttering Quick Access with recently opened files, and change File Explorer’s default startup view.

How to Pin Any Folder to Quick Access

You can pin any local or external directory to Quick Access using three straightforward methods:

Method 1: Right-Click Context Menu

  1. Open File Explorer (press Windows + E).
  2. Locate the folder you want to keep easily accessible.
  3. Right-click the folder.
  4. Select Pin to Quick access (represented by a pushpin icon).

Method 2: Drag and Drop into the Navigation Pane

  1. Click and hold your target folder in the main File Explorer pane.
  2. Drag the folder into the left-hand navigation sidebar and hover over the Quick access header (or directly below Home).
  3. When you see a tooltip reading “Pin to Quick access”, release your mouse button.

Method 3: Using the Ribbon Menu

  1. Click to select the folder.
  2. Look at the top command ribbon in File Explorer.
  3. Click the three horizontal dots (See more) and choose Pin to Quick access.

Your pinned folder will now display a permanent pushpin badge beside its icon, appearing at the top of the left navigation tree and in the Quick Access grid under Home.

Unpinning and Reordering Pinned Folders

Managing your pinned locations as project priorities change takes only seconds:

  • Unpin a Folder: Right-click the pinned folder in the left navigation pane or inside the Home grid and select Unpin from Quick access. This removes the shortcut immediately; it does not delete the underlying folder or any of its contents.
  • Reorder Pinned Folders: Click and hold any pinned folder in the left navigation sidebar, then drag it up or down to your preferred position in the list. Releasing your mouse locks in the new sequence.

Pinning Network Drives and Cloud Locations

Quick Access is not restricted to local drives (C: or D:). You can pin folders residing across local networks, NAS servers, or secondary cloud storage providers:

  1. Map your network share as a drive letter or navigate to its UNC path (e.g. \\Server\SharedFolder).
  2. Right-click the target subfolder and choose Pin to Quick access.

Note: If your computer is disconnected from the local network, clicking a pinned network folder will temporarily display an error until the network connection is restored.

Stopping Windows from Automatically Adding Recent Files

By default, Windows 11 automatically injects recently opened files and frequently visited folders into the Quick Access section. While designed for convenience, this feature can compromise privacy when sharing your screen during presentations or collaborating with colleagues. To restrict Quick Access strictly to folders you explicitly pin:

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows + E).
  2. Click the three horizontal dots (See more) in the top toolbar.
  3. Select Options to open the Folder Options dialogue window.
  4. Under the General tab, look at the bottom Privacy section.
  5. Untick Show recently used files.
  6. Untick Show frequently used folders.
  7. Untick Show files from Office.com (if using a Microsoft account).
  8. Click Apply, then click OK.

File Explorer will now display only the exact folders you have deliberately pinned, leaving your workspace uncluttered and private.

Changing File Explorer Startup to “This PC” Instead of Home

When you launch File Explorer in Windows 11, it opens to the “Home” dashboard by default. If you prefer the classic Windows layout displaying your local storage drives (C:, D:, USBs) and network connections:

  1. In File Explorer, click the three dots > Options.
  2. At the very top of the General tab, locate the dropdown labelled Open File Explorer to:.
  3. Click the dropdown and switch it from Home to This PC.
  4. Click OK.

Every new File Explorer window will now launch directly into your drives and device inventory.

Clearing File Explorer Quick Access History

If you want to wipe past file recommendations without changing permanent settings:

  1. Open File Explorer > three dots > Options.
  2. In the Privacy section at the bottom, click the Clear button next to Clear File Explorer history.
  3. Click OK.

All temporary recent items will be purged immediately, while your manually pinned Quick Access folders remain untouched.

Troubleshooting Disappearing Pins and Corrupted Navigation

  • Pinned Folders Disappearing After Restart: This typically indicates corrupted shell roaming cache files. Press Windows + R, paste %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations, press Enter, and delete the cache files inside. Windows will recreate a clean cache.
  • Access Denied Error on Pinned Item: If a pinned folder was moved, renamed, or deleted on disk, clicking the pinned shortcut will trigger a “Location is not available” dialogue. Simply right-click the dead icon and choose Unpin from Quick access.
