How to Block Pop-up Windows and Website Redirects in Safari on Mac

Intrusive advertisement pop-ups, disguised click-fraud windows, and unprompted browser tab redirects degrade the browsing experience and can expose users to phishing scams. While modern web standards discourage disruptive pop-up scripts, many media streaming portals, file conversion services, and ad networks continue to deploy aggressive pop-under triggers. Apple Safari on macOS provides robust, native content blocking controls that silence unwanted windows globally while allowing you to whitelist trusted banking and enterprise portals.

Enabling Global Pop-up Blocking in Safari Settings

You can verify and enforce system-wide pop-up prevention directly inside Safari preferences:

  1. Launch Safari on your Mac.
  2. Click Safari in the menu bar at the top-left corner of the screen and choose Settings… (or press Command + ,).
  3. Switch to the Websites tab at the top of the settings window.
  4. In the left-hand navigation column under the General heading, click Pop-up Windows.
  5. Look at the bottom-right corner of the window for the setting labelled When visiting other websites:.
  6. Click the drop-down menu and choose Block and Notify (which suppresses the pop-up while displaying a discreet notification icon in the address bar) or Block (which silences all pop-ups completely).

Managing Pop-up Permissions for Specific Websites

Legitimate web services—such as online banking portals, tax preparation software, or university portals—frequently open PDF invoices, login tokens, or receipts in secondary pop-up windows. You can manage per-website exceptions easily:

  1. Open the specific website requiring pop-ups in Safari.
  2. Click Safari > Settings… > Websites > Pop-up Windows.
  3. The active website will appear under the Currently Open Websites list.
  4. Click the drop-down menu next to the website domain and select Allow.
  5. Alternatively, right-click (or Control-click) inside the Smart Search field at the top of Safari, select Settings for This Website…, and toggle Pop-up Windows to Allow from the quick flyout card.

Preventing Fraudulent Redirects and Cross-Site Tracking

Some deceptive scripts bypass standard pop-up filters by hijacking the current tab address and redirecting your browser to suspicious prize scams or fake virus warnings. To reinforce Safari’s defences:

  • Enable Fraudulent Website Warnings: In Safari Settings, open the Security tab and ensure Warn when visiting a fraudulent website is checked. This cross-checks URLs against Apple and Google safe-browsing telemetry.
  • Prevent Cross-Site Tracking: Open the Privacy tab and verify that Prevent cross-site tracking and Hide IP address from trackers are active. This neutralises third-party ad server redirect chains before they execute.
