The Apple iPad features internal gyroscopes and accelerometers that automatically adjust display orientation between portrait and landscape modes as you tilt or rotate the tablet. While fluid rotation is advantageous when alternating between typing on a desk and reading in hand, it can become frustrating when reading eBooks in bed, sketching with the Apple Pencil at an angle, or presenting slides. In iPadOS, you can lock your screen orientation in place instantly using Control Centre.
Accessing Control Centre on iPadOS
Modern iPad models running iPadOS (including iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and base iPad models) access system toggles through a swipe gesture:
- Locate the top-right corner of your iPad screen (where the battery indicator and Wi-Fi icons reside).
- Place your finger or Apple Pencil at the very top edge and swipe downwards smoothly.
- The Control Centre panel slides down into view over your active app.
Toggling the Rotation Lock Setting
Inside Control Centre, Apple provides a dedicated orientation lock toggle:
- First, physically rotate your iPad into the exact view you wish to maintain (either Portrait or Landscape).
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Centre.
- Locate the Rotation Lock button (represented by an icon showing an open lock enclosed inside a circular arrow).
- Tap the Rotation Lock button once.
- The button icon will illuminate white with a red highlight, confirming that orientation lock is active.
- Tap anywhere outside the Control Centre panel or swipe upwards from the bottom edge to return to your app.
A lock badge briefly appears on screen, indicating that rotation is locked. Your iPad will now remain fixed in that specific orientation regardless of how you hold or tilt the device.
Troubleshooting Apps That Refuse to Rotate
If you have turned Rotation Lock off but your screen still fails to rotate when you tilt the device, consider these common factors:
- App-Specific Restrictions: Certain third-party apps—particularly video games, banking clients, and vertical social feeds—are hardcoded by their developers to display exclusively in portrait or landscape mode. In these apps, display rotation is disabled at the code level.
- Stage Manager Multi-Window Mode: When connecting your iPad to an external monitor with Stage Manager active, primary display orientation is managed by external display negotiation rules in Settings > Display & Brightness > Arrangement.
- Hardware Sensor Calibration: If the screen remains frozen across all native Apple apps (such as Safari and Notes) with lock disabled, restart your iPad via Settings > General > Shut Down to recalibrate the accelerometer sensors.
