How to Stop iPhone from Automatically Answering Incoming Calls

Few mobile phone behaviours are more intrusive or embarrassing than an incoming phone call that answers itself after just a couple of rings. When your iPhone picks up calls automatically without you swiping the “Slide to answer” slider or tapping the green answer button, callers may suddenly hear private conversations, confidential office discussions, or household noise before you even realise the call is connected.

While this automated behaviour can make you suspect that your iPhone has been hacked or that a recent iOS update caused a software glitch, it is almost always caused by an enabled accessibility feature called Auto-Answer Calls. In this guide, you will learn how to disable auto-answer calls on iPhone, configure call audio routing, and prevent unwanted pickups.

What Causes an iPhone to Answer Calls Automatically?

Apple includes powerful accessibility tools designed to help individuals with motor impairments, limited mobility, or hands-free driving requirements interact with their devices. The Auto-Answer Calls setting instructs iOS to automatically accept any incoming phone call, FaceTime audio call, or third-party VoIP call (such as WhatsApp, Teams, or Zoom) after a user-defined duration of ringing.

If this feature was inadvertently switched on during initial setup, toggled by a family member, or activated via an Accessibility Shortcut, your iPhone will continually answer every ring cycle until disabled.

How to Turn Off Auto-Answer Calls on iPhone

To disable automated call answering and restore full manual control over your phone calls:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
  3. Under the Physical and Motor category, select Touch.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the Touch options and tap Call Audio Routing.
  5. Near the bottom of the screen, tap Auto-Answer Calls.
  6. Toggle the switch beside Auto-Answer Calls to the Off position (grey).

Once toggled off, incoming calls will ring normally until you manually tap the green answer button, swipe the on-screen slider, or press the Side button to decline the call.

Configuring Call Audio Routing Preferences

While inside the Call Audio Routing menu, check which audio output your iPhone prioritises when you do answer calls:

  • Automatic: iOS routes audio to the iPhone earpiece by default, but switches intelligently to connected Bluetooth headphones (such as AirPods) or car systems when active.
  • Bluetooth Headset: Forces calls to route through wireless headphones whenever paired.
  • Speaker: Automatically routes every call to the loud speakerphone. If you frequently find calls blasting out loud upon answering, ensure this is switched back to Automatic.

Checking Siri Call Announcements and Headphones

If your calls only answer automatically while wearing AirPods or Beats headphones:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Siri & Search (or Apple Intelligence & Siri in iOS 18).
  2. Tap Announce Calls.
  3. If you prefer Siri not to prompt you or accept calls automatically via voice confirmation, set this to Never.
