Tab groups in Google Chrome revolutionised how users handle sprawling research tasks, travel bookings, and multi-app workflows by allowing related web pages to collapse into neat, colour-coded clusters. However, closing Chrome historically risked losing these carefully organised clusters unless users restored their entire browsing session. In modern versions of Google Chrome, Google introduced Saved Tab Groups. You can now pin active tab groups directly to your bookmarks bar, reopen entire research clusters with one click, and seamlessly synchronise them across all signed-in desktop computers.
How Saved Tab Groups Function in Chrome
Saved Tab Groups bridge the gap between temporary open tabs and permanent bookmarks:
- Bookmarks Bar Integration: When you save a tab group, a colour-coded pill button automatically pins itself to the left side of your Bookmarks bar.
- Instant Workspace Restoration: You can safely close a tab group to free up computer memory; clicking its icon on the bookmarks bar later instantly reopens all member tabs exactly as you left them.
- Cross-Device Synchronisation: As long as Chrome Sync is enabled on your Google account, saved tab groups travel automatically between your home desktop, work laptop, and Chromebook.
How to Create and Save a Tab Group
Setting up your first saved group takes only a few seconds:
- Open the web pages you want to group in Google Chrome.
- Right-click on the first tab and select Add tab to new group.
- Give your group a clear, descriptive name (such as “Flight Comparison” or “Work Project”) and choose a distinctive colour circle.
- Toggle the switch next to Save group to the On position.
- Drag additional open tabs into the coloured group boundary, or right-click any tab and choose Add to group > [Group Name].
A matching coloured icon representing your saved group will immediately anchor itself to the top left of your Bookmarks bar.
Reopening and Hiding Saved Groups
Managing your active workspace without losing saved research is effortless:
- To Hide or Close an Active Group: Right-click the coloured group title pill in the tab strip and choose Hide or Close group. The open browser tabs will vanish from your top strip, reclaiming system RAM.
- To Reopen a Saved Group: Simply click the saved group pill icon sitting on your Bookmarks bar. Chrome instantly launches all constituent pages into an active group.
- To Delete a Saved Group Permanently: Right-click the group icon on the Bookmarks bar and select Delete group. Confirm the prompt to remove the group and its references permanently.
Ensuring Saved Tab Groups Sync Across Computers
To make certain your saved groups appear on all your laptops and desktop devices:
- Click your profile avatar icon in the top-right corner of Chrome and verify that Sync is on.
- Click the three-dot menu button, open Settings, and click Sync and Google services.
- Click Manage what you sync.
- Ensure either Sync everything is chosen or the Bookmarks and Open Tabs checkboxes are checked.
