How to Star Important Files and Folders in Google Drive for Quick Access

As your Google Drive accumulates hundreds of spreadsheets, meeting recordings, PDFs, and team project directories, navigating deep folder hierarchies to locate your daily active documents can consume valuable time. Rather than cluttering your root directory with loose files or moving items out of shared team folders, Google Drive offers a lightweight bookmarking system: Starred items. Adding a star flags critical documents for instant access from a dedicated navigation hub on web, desktop, and mobile.

How the Starred Section Operates

Starring an item in Google Drive acts as a personal bookmark without altering the file’s storage location, shared permissions, or parent directory. If a file is stored inside a deeply nested shared drive or subfolder, starring it creates an immediate pointer in your personal Starred view. Other collaborators sharing the file do not see your stars, making it a completely private organisation tool tailored to your personal workflow.

Starring Files and Folders in Google Drive on the Web

Adding a star takes only a couple of clicks inside your browser:

  1. Navigate to Google Drive in your web browser.
  2. Locate any document, image, or folder in your file list.
  3. Right-click the item (or click the three vertical dots menu on the right edge of the row).
  4. Click Organise and select Add to starred.
  5. Alternatively, select the file and press the keyboard shortcut s.
  6. A small star icon will appear beside the file name, confirming it has been added to your priority list.

Accessing Your Starred Collection

Whenever you need to quickly open your bookmarked materials:

  1. Look at the primary navigation sidebar along the left side of Google Drive.
  2. Click on Starred (indicated by a star symbol).
  3. All your starred folders and individual files appear immediately in one consolidated list.
  4. You can sort your starred view by Name, Last modified, or Last opened by me to quickly reach what you need.

Managing Starred Items on the Google Drive Mobile App

The Google Drive app for Android, iPhone, and iPad offers full support for starred bookmarks:

  1. Open the Google Drive mobile app.
  2. Tap the three horizontal or vertical dots beside any file or folder.
  3. Tap Add to Starred.
  4. To view your collection, tap the Starred tab located in the bottom navigation bar.

Removing Stars When Projects Conclude

To keep your Starred section focused and prevent it from becoming as cluttered as your general drive:

  • Right-click any completed project file or folder in the Starred view.
  • Select Organise > Remove from starred (or press s again while selected).
  • The file remains completely safe and accessible in its original directory—only the quick-access bookmark is removed.
