How to Enable and Use Select-to-Speak on Chromebook for Natural Text Reading

Reading long articles, textbooks, technical documentation, or lengthy email threads on a laptop can often lead to eye strain and reduced information retention. While screen readers like ChromeVox are indispensable for visually impaired users who require full system vocal navigation, everyday students, researchers, and professionals often desire a lightweight, on-demand audio assistant that reads specific passages of text aloud without taking over the entire computer interface.

For this purpose, Google built Select-to-Speak into ChromeOS. Select-to-Speak allows you to select specific paragraphs, sentences, or entire web pages on your Chromebook and have them read aloud using natural speech synthesis. As it reads, Select-to-Speak dynamically highlights every individual word in sync with the audio track, making it an invaluable tool for proofreading, language acquisition, and multitasking. This tutorial explains how to enable Select-to-Speak, customise voice and reading speed options, trigger reading with keyboard shortcuts, and configure word highlighting.

What Is Select-to-Speak and How Does It Function?

Unlike full-featured screen readers that narrate every button, menu, and cursor movement, Select-to-Speak remains dormant until you intentionally summon it:

  • Selective Reading: You decide precisely what text gets vocalised by dragging a selection rectangle or clicking an individual paragraph.
  • Synchronised Visual Highlighting: Words are highlighted in bright colours as they are spoken, allowing you to follow along visually and catch grammatical errors easily.
  • Natural Voices: Utilises high-quality Google neural text-to-speech voices across dozens of accents and international languages.
  • Background Dimming: Automatically shades out the surrounding background content to focus visual attention on the active reading passage.

How to Enable Select-to-Speak in ChromeOS Settings

You can turn on Select-to-Speak through the ChromeOS accessibility control panel:

  1. Click the Quick Settings panel (the time and battery tray) in the bottom-right corner of your Chromebook shelf.
  2. Click the Settings (gear) icon to open the system settings.
  3. In the left-hand navigation menu, select Accessibility.
  4. Under the Text-to-Speech section, locate Select-to-speak.
  5. Toggle the switch to the On position.

A new Select-to-Speak icon (depicting a speaker with radiating sound waves) will immediately appear on your bottom Chromebook shelf beside the clock, ready for use.

How to Use Select-to-Speak to Read Text Aloud

ChromeOS offers three flexible methods to trigger audio reading depending on whether you prefer mouse, touchscreen, or keyboard shortcuts.

Method 1: Click and Drag with the Shelf Icon

  1. Navigate to the document, web article, or email you wish to hear.
  2. Click the Select-to-Speak icon on the shelf. The icon will illuminate in blue, indicating active selection mode.
  3. Click and drag a bounding box over the paragraph or text passage you want to read.
  4. Release the mouse or trackpad. ChromeOS will immediately begin reading the selected passage aloud while highlighting words sequentially.

Method 2: Using the Search Key Keyboard Shortcut (Fastest)

If you prefer keeping your hands on the keyboard, you can trigger reading instantly without clicking shelf icons:

  1. Press and hold the Search key (the magnifying glass key or Everything button) on your Chromebook keyboard.
  2. While holding the Search key, drag your mouse cursor over the target text, or simply click on a paragraph.
  3. ChromeOS will instantly begin reading that section aloud.

Method 3: Selecting Text First and Pressing a Hotkey

  1. Highlight any block of text on your screen using your standard cursor selection.
  2. Press Search + S on your keyboard.
  3. Select-to-Speak will read the highlighted selection from beginning to end.

Controlling Audio Playback During Reading

While Select-to-Speak is narrating text, a miniature floating playback controller appears on your screen:

  • Press the Play / Pause button (or press the Spacebar) to pause and resume narration.
  • Click the Forward or Rewind buttons to jump to the next or previous sentence.
  • Click the Stop (X) button (or press the Escape key) to terminate the reading session immediately.

How to Customise Voices, Speed, and Word Highlighting

You can fine-tune the speech engine to match your personal listening preferences:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech > Select-to-speak settings.
  2. Under Speech, click the Voice dropdown to select from available local or natural network voices (including British English, Australian English, and regional accents).
  3. Adjust the Speech rate slider to accelerate or decelerate reading speed (ideal for fast scanning at 1.25x or 1.5x).
  4. Under Highlighting, choose whether to enable Highlight each word as it’s spoken and select your preferred highlight colour.
  5. Toggle Shade background content to darken the screen surrounding the reading passage for enhanced focus.

Troubleshooting Select-to-Speak Issues

If Select-to-Speak does not produce audio or skips text, check these common settings:

  • Volume and Mute Settings: Ensure your Chromebook speaker volume is turned up and physical hardware mute switches are disengaged.
  • Unselectable Image Text: Select-to-Speak reads selectable digital text. If an article consists of scanned bitmap images or non-OCR PDFs, text characters cannot be parsed. Use Google Drive or OCR tools to convert scanned images to editable text first.
  • Network Natural Voices Delay: If you select high-definition “Natural” network voices, reading may experience a brief pause while audio streams buffer. Select a local on-device voice if you frequently work offline.
