Multitasking across multiple active desktop applications often requires monitoring a small fragment of a window—such as a live YouTube video player, an active stock ticker chart, a continuous build log, or a specific chat thread—while keeping the remainder of your screen open for writing, spreadsheets, or coding. Traditionally, this required clumsy window resizing or third-party picture-in-picture extensions. Microsoft solves this workflow challenge in Windows 11 with Crop and Lock, a powerful utility included in the official Microsoft PowerToys suite that crops any open application into a custom mini-window.
What Is PowerToys Crop and Lock?
Crop and Lock allows users to crop an existing application window into a focused sub-window, providing two operational modes:
- Reparent Mode (Interactive Crop): Re-parents the cropped portion of the application into a new interactive window. You can type, click, scroll, and interact with the cropped interface exactly as you would in the full application.
- Thumbnail Mode (Non-Interactive Mirror): Creates a live, read-only mirror of the designated screen area. It displays live visual updates (such as updating video feeds or moving graphs) without accepting mouse clicks or keyboard input, acting as an unobtrusive desktop widget.
Step 1: Installing and Updating Microsoft PowerToys
Crop and Lock is integrated into Microsoft PowerToys version 0.73 and later.
Installing via the Microsoft Store or winget
Install PowerToys directly via the Windows Package Manager in Windows Terminal or PowerShell:
winget install Microsoft.PowerToys --source winget
Alternatively, open the Microsoft Store app, search for Microsoft PowerToys, and click Install.
Step 2: Enabling Crop and Lock in PowerToys Settings
Before using the keyboard shortcuts, ensure the utility is active:
- Launch the PowerToys app from your Windows 11 Start menu or system tray.
- In the left sidebar, click Crop and Lock.
- Toggle the switch next to Enable Crop and Lock to the On position.
- Review the default activation shortcuts:
- Thumbnail Mode (Mirror):
Windows + Ctrl + Shift + T - Reparent Mode (Interactive):
Windows + Ctrl + Shift + R
- Thumbnail Mode (Mirror):
You can customise either shortcut combination by clicking the pencil icon next to each binding.
Step 3: Creating an Interactive Cropped Window (Reparent Mode)
Use Reparent Mode when you need to interact with the cropped application (e.g., controlling a music playback bar or typing inside a calculator):
- Open the target application window on your desktop (e.g., your web browser, Spotify, or an IDE).
- Click inside the application to make it the active foreground window.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + R.
- Your mouse cursor will transform into a selection crosshair.
- Click and drag a bounding box around the specific region of the window you want to isolate (for example, just the video player area of a web page).
- Release the mouse button.
PowerToys instantly closes the full parent window view and converts your selection into a compact, borderless window containing only the cropped element. You can click buttons, type text, and resize the sub-window normally.
Step 4: Creating a Live Monitored Thumbnail (Thumbnail Mode)
Use Thumbnail Mode when you only want to observe live updates without accidentally clicking elements:
- Bring the target window to the foreground.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + T.
- Click and drag your bounding box around the region to mirror.
- Release the mouse. A miniature picture-in-picture window appears.
Because Thumbnail mode creates a visual projection of the original window, closing the thumbnail does not disrupt the background application.
Step 5: Closing or Restoring the Cropped Window
When you finish your focused monitoring task:
- Exiting Reparent Mode: Simply click the standard close button (X) on the top-right of the cropped window. Doing so restores the application back into its original full-sized window without closing or crashing the process.
- Exiting Thumbnail Mode: Click the close button (X) on the floating thumbnail to dismiss the preview.
Pairing Crop and Lock with “Always on Top”
To prevent your cropped window from disappearing behind other active documents, combine it with another PowerToys utility: Always on Top:
- Click on your cropped mini-window to activate it.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + T (the default shortcut for Always on Top).
- A subtle accent border will surround the window, locking it permanently above all other applications.
Troubleshooting Application Compatibility Issues
- App Fails to Reparent Cleanly: Certain applications built on custom graphics frameworks (such as some hardware-accelerated games or Electron wrappers with custom title bars) may resist Reparent mode. If an app crashes or fails to respond, use Thumbnail Mode (Win + Ctrl + Shift + T) instead.
- Blank Black Window in Thumbnail Mode: If streaming video displays a black rectangle, disable Hardware Acceleration within the target browser’s settings to bypass protected video overlay restrictions.
Streamlining Your Desktop Real Estate
Crop and Lock gives Windows 11 users granular control over their screen geometry. By stripping away extraneous toolbars, ads, and side panels to spotlight only essential information, you can build custom monitoring dashboards and multitask efficiently on single-monitor workstations.
