How to Boot into Safe Mode in Windows 11

The Diagnostic Isolation Vector

When Windows 11 begins crashing repeatedly, throwing Blue Screens of Death (BSOD), or failing to load the desktop environment entirely, you cannot troubleshoot the issue during a normal boot. Standard boot sequences load hundreds of third-party drivers, background utilities, and startup applications, any of which could be causing the fatal error. You must force the operating system into a highly restrictive diagnostic state that loads only the absolute bare minimum, Microsoft-certified drivers required to draw the screen and operate the mouse.

How to Boot into Safe Mode

Microsoft has intentionally made entering Safe Mode more difficult in Windows 11 than in older versions; you can no longer simply mash the F8 key during startup.

1. From the Desktop (If Windows still boots):
* Open the Start Menu and click the Power icon.
* Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard, and while holding it, click Restart.
2. From the Login Screen (If you cannot reach the desktop):
* Click the Power icon in the bottom-right corner of the login screen.
* Hold down the Shift key and click Restart.
3. The Recovery Environment: Your PC will reboot into a blue screen titled “Choose an option.”
* Click Troubleshoot.
* Click Advanced options.
* Click Startup Settings.
* Click the Restart button at the bottom right.
4. The Final Selection: The PC will reboot again and present a numbered list of Startup Settings.
* Press the Number 4 key (or F4) on your keyboard to Enable Safe Mode without networking.
* Press the Number 5 key (or F5) if you absolutely require internet access to download a repair tool.

Windows will now load the minimal diagnostic environment, allowing you to uninstall the problematic software or run antivirus scans without interference.
