How to Hide Alerts for a Text Message Conversation on iPhone

The Targeted Isolation Vector

The standard iOS Do Not Disturb mode is a blunt instrument; it silences all incoming notifications across the entire device. However, if you are stuck in a massive, 20-person group text message that is generating an alert every three seconds about a dinner reservation, you do not want to silence your entire phone. You still need to receive critical emails or phone calls from your family. You must isolate and mute that specific conversation while leaving the rest of the operating system’s alerts fully active.

How to Hide Alerts for a Text Message Conversation

Apple includes a targeted suppression feature directly within the Messages app, allowing you to mute individual threads without deleting them or blocking the participants.

1. Open the green Messages app on your iPhone.
2. The Swipe Method (Fastest):
* Locate the hyperactive group chat or individual conversation in your main message list.
* Place your finger on that specific conversation and swipe it firmly to the left.
* Two buttons will appear: a red Trash Can, and a purple Bell icon with a slash through it.
* Tap the purple Bell icon.
3. The Detail Method:
* Alternatively, tap into the actual conversation itself.
* Tap the cluster of profile pictures (or the individual’s name) at the absolute top-center of the screen.
* A settings card will slide down. Look for the toggle switch labelled Hide Alerts.
* Tap the toggle to switch it to the On position.

A small, grey crescent moon icon will now appear permanently affixed to the right side of that conversation in your main message list. When new messages arrive in that thread, your phone will not vibrate, the screen will not wake up, and no banner will appear, but the messages will silently collect for you to read at your leisure.
