How to Share Your Wi-Fi Password from iPhone

The Cryptographic Exchange Vector

When a friend visits your home and asks to connect to your Wi-Fi network, reading a 20-character, randomly generated string of alphanumeric characters off the back of a router is incredibly tedious and prone to typographical errors. If both you and your guest are operating within the Apple ecosystem (using iPhones, iPads, or Macs), the operating system includes a deeply integrated cryptographic handshake protocol designed to securely transmit the password over the air, completely bypassing manual entry.

How to Share Your Wi-Fi Password

This feature requires zero configuration, but it relies on a strict set of environmental prerequisites to function.

1. The Prerequisites: Both iPhones must have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. Both devices must have AirDrop enabled. Crucially, you must have each other’s Apple ID email addresses saved in your respective Contacts apps. The feature will not work with a stranger.
2. Ensure your iPhone (the one sharing the password) is unlocked and currently connected to the target Wi-Fi network.
3. Instruct your guest to open their Settings app, tap on Wi-Fi, and tap the name of your specific network.
4. Their iPhone will display the standard password entry field. Tell them to stop and wait.
5. Within two seconds, a large dialogue box will suddenly slide up from the bottom of your iPhone screen, stating: “Do you want to share the Wi-Fi password for [Network Name] with [Guest Name]?”
6. Tap the blue Share Password button.
7. The cryptographic keys will instantly beam over the local Bluetooth connection. The password field on your guest’s phone will automatically populate with hidden dots, and their device will instantly join the network.
8. Tap Done on your screen to dismiss the dialogue box.
