How to Block Pop-up Windows in Google Chrome

The Intrusive Advertising Vector

While the modern web has largely moved past the chaotic days of the early 2000s, aggressive pop-up windows and forced redirects remain a significant nuisance, particularly on file-sharing sites and unverified streaming platforms. These pop-ups frequently attempt to camouflage themselves as legitimate system warnings or fake virus alerts designed to trick you into downloading malware. You must ensure that Google Chrome’s primary defensive perimeter is engaged to block these unauthorized window spawns.

How to Block Pop-up Windows

Google Chrome includes a highly aggressive, native pop-up blocker that is usually enabled by default, but it can occasionally be deactivated by malicious browser extensions or accidental clicks.

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Privacy and security.
5. In the main pane, click on Site settings.
6. Scroll down to the “Content” section and click on Pop-ups and redirects.
7. Ensure the radio button next to Don’t allow sites to send pop-ups or use redirects is selected.

If you have this setting enabled but still require pop-ups for a specific, trusted website (such as a banking portal that opens PDF statements in a new window), do not disable the global blocker. Instead, scroll down to the Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects section, click the Add button, and type the exact URL of your bank into the whitelist.
