How to Disable Push Notifications from Websites in Chrome

The Notification Spam Vector

Modern websites frequently exploit Google Chrome’s native notification system to push breaking news alerts, promotional offers, and chat requests directly to your desktop. By default, almost every news site and blog you visit will throw up an aggressive pop-up prompt asking for permission to send you these notifications. Constantly clicking “Block” on these prompts is incredibly tedious, and accidentally clicking “Allow” will result in a relentless barrage of spam appearing in the corner of your screen, even when the browser is closed.

How to Disable Notification Prompts

You can instruct Chrome to globally deny all notification requests, completely eliminating the prompts from ever appearing on your screen again.

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Privacy and security.
5. Click on Site settings.
6. Scroll down to the Permissions section and click on Notifications.
7. Look at the top section titled Default behavior.
8. Click the radio button next to Don’t allow sites to send notifications.

Chrome will immediately enforce a blanket ban. Websites will silently fail when attempting to ask for permission, ensuring your browsing experience remains entirely uninterrupted. If you previously allowed sites to send notifications, you must scroll down to the “Allowed” list on the same page and manually remove them.
