The Functionality Interruption Vector
Google Chrome features a highly effective, native pop-up blocker designed to protect users from aggressive advertising and malicious redirects. By default, it aggressively intercepts any script attempting to open a new browser window without direct user interaction. However, many enterprise web applications, legacy banking portals, and university testing systems still rely on pop-up windows to serve essential documents or login screens. If Chrome blocks these legitimate windows, the website will appear completely broken.
How to Disable the Pop-Up Blocker
You can instruct Chrome to temporarily suspend its blocking algorithms, either globally across the entire internet or specifically for a trusted website.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Privacy and security.
5. Click on Site settings.
6. Scroll down to the Content section and click on Pop-ups and redirects.
7. To disable the blocker globally (not recommended for daily browsing), select the radio button next to Sites can send pop-ups and use redirects.
8. To safely disable the blocker for a single trusted website, leave the global setting on “Don’t allow”, scroll down to the Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects section, click Add, and type the specific URL of the broken website.
Once the exception is added, return to the problematic website and refresh the page. The necessary pop-up window will now launch successfully without interception.
